American drought: America's decline into darkness begins

American drought has made the news.  Just a few nights ago I saw a report with Furutachi Ichiro of Hodo Station, talking about how the crisis in American agriculture is affecting Japanese food supply.

I wrote about this last April, and my predictions are not only correct, the reality is worse.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2012/04/america-desert-land.html

We have had the massive wildfires.

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/fire/

Of course, the wildfire season is nowhere near over.  There is a strong possibility of fire until fall.

What is worse, in my April blog post I talked about three major centers of American drought.  These were The American West, The Great Plains States, and the American Southeast.

These are centers of extreme drought.

What is new is a massive center of extreme drought extending northeast from the state of Arkansas, through the Mississippi/Ohio river junction through Indiana.  In fact, almost the entire continental US is under at least severe drought according to the US Drought Monitor.

http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

A lake in Indiana.  I grew up near here, normally there is abundant water.  This is a picture of a reservoir for the city of Indianapolis.

So how long will this drought last?  All Summer.

American agriculture has been absolutely devastated.

What rain is forecast is not enough to help.

Poor agriculture in turn means not enough feed for cattle;

There is not enough water for cattle either.

And poultry.  They are dying in the heat.

So.  Is this just a freak event?  Will America recover, and again in the future be a food supplier to the world.

No.

Each of the last three decades has broken heat records, becoming the hottest decade on record.  The 2020 decade looks to be the same.

http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2010/07/28/206491/hottest-decade-year-week-record-low-arctic-sea-ice-volume/

Please take a look at this link.  It records the snowpack in the American West.  I took the month of May, and rated it from 1995 to 2012.

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/cgibin/westsnow.pl

May 2012   Really Terrible
May 2011   Excellent
May 2010   Very Poor
May 2009   Poor
May 2008   So-so
May 2007   Terrible
May 2006   Poor
May 2005   Good (south) Poor (north)
May 2004   Terrible
May 2003   Very Poor
May 2002   Terrible
May 2001   Really Terrible
May 2000   Really Terrible
May 1999   Very Good
May 1998   Good (south) Poor (north)
May 1997   Good
May 1996   Poor
May 1995   Very Good

Really terrible=とてもひどい Excellent=素晴しい Very Poor=とても悪い Poor=悪い So-so=まあまあ Good=良い Very Good=とても良い

In a couple of entries, I distinguished between north and south for a good reason.  Water from this southern region must support a much greater population in southern California, Las Vegas, and Arizona.

We can see a definite pattern, it is getting much drier.  As I wrote in my post, the snowpack is the main source of water for the American West.

Drought is very destructive of farm soil. To recover, it is obvious.  Water is needed.  However, if we look at the chart of snowpack that I made up above, since 1995, there have only been a few years of really good snowpack.  Terrible conditions are the new normal.

If the next winter produces a lot of snow, final American collapse can be postponed for a few years.  However, looking at the chart above, there 3 or 4 bad years for every good year.  2011 was a very good year, so another good year, by this schedule, will not come until 2013 or 2014.

It will be too late.  One more bad summer, too many soils will have been permanently damaged.  Deserts will extend into the American Midwest, the Great Lakes region.

In any case, even if a lot of snow falls this coming winter, the years after that will be bad.  America will become a desert land no matter what.  This is permanent climate change.

In July of 2011 I wrote about a possible scenario for American collapse by lack of oil.  It could come quickly, a sudden spike in oil prices would make it impossible to supply American cities with food.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2011/07/part-ii-comparing-collapse-of-america.html

The same problem exists with drought.  In 2008, the city of Atlanta came within about 6 weeks of losing all water.  The city was saved by miracle rains.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2008/08/blog-post.html

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2008/09/part-ii-atlanta-heat-island-part-ii.html

The city has only one reservoir, Lake Lanier.  It came within 6 weeks of running out of water.  Atlanta has a population of 5 million, not to mention industries like Coca-Cola.

My very optimistic American friends ridiculed my worries at the time.  They said things like, well that the Army would truck in water.  Really, does America posses enough water trucks for 5 million people?

Americans believe too much in miracles.  When I talk about drought, they assume water can be brought from somewhere else.

Well, there is one great source of freshwater in North America.  It is in Canada.

Very unfortunately, Americans are destroying it, in their quest to get oil of of tar sands.  Take a look at the photo essay below.

http://www.businessinsider.com/canada-tar-sands-pictures-2010-7?op=1

Photos of oil operations in the Canadian tar sand fields.

Frankly, if I lived in North America, I don't think I would like to drink that water.  But it seems that for Americans, having gasoline for cars is more important than having drinking water or water for crops.  In any case, infrastructure to move oil from Canada to America is under construction, there is nothing to move water that I know of.  It would take several years, and America no longer has those several years.  In any case, even in Canada, I don't think there is enough water for America's needs.

Here in Japan, we are now going to suffer.  Soybeans are about to become rare, this is a vital part of the Japanese diet.  And this is the lesson we should learn for too dependence on America.  America has made many serious mistakes, now they will pay for it with the disappearance of their civilization.  I really don't see how the Japanese government can still be serious about TPP with America in such awful shape.  It is time for Japanese to quit depending on America, and to guide our own destiny.

How to counter attack on the Comfort women issue

This issue is back.  In Seoul, a person rams the Japanese embassy with his truck.

http://www.japantoday.com/category/crime/view/s-korean-rams-gate-at-japanese-embassy-in-protest?utm_campaign=jt_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=jt_newsletter_2012-07-09_PM

American Secretary of State Clinton has taken the Korean side of this issue.

http://www.chosunonline.com/site/data/html_dir/2012/07/09/2012070900718.html

And that illustrates the problem, and the source of my concern.  In America, I am seeing a concentrated campaign to defame Japan.  I am very worried about this particular incident.

The photo above is from the link below.

http://iamkoream.com/january-issue-comfort-women-celebrate-1000th-protest/

This is from a party in Queens New York on December 13th 2011.  Korean Comfort women survivors were introduced to Jewish holocaust survivors.

It was sponsored in part by the Korean American voters Council.

http://www.kavc.org/

It seems as if Korean Americans are trying to team up with Jewish people, and use them to attack Japan.  Jewish people are very powerful in America, and if they become sympathetic to the Korean point of view, Japan will be in serious trouble.

In every aspect of Japanese/American relations, Japan will be seen as an evil nation.

The truth is, while Japanese truly like America, very few Americans have feelings of affection or trust for Japan and Japanese people.  So it will be very easy for Korean Americans to sway American opinion.

And like Secretary of State Clinton, American women have very strong opinions.  Japan is already looking very bad.

The point is, to American minds, before World War II, Japan was a country that was completely bad.  To American thinking, after WWII, Japan has become a somewhat good democratic country, because of American efforts.

This is why present Japanese efforts concerning the Comfort Women memorials in America are guaranteed to fail.  And make us look like idiots to American people.

At the moment, Japanese efforts are to debate the history of Comfort Women, to try to prove it was not so bad as the Koreans say, in effect most women were not coerced.  Americans will not listen to this.  They are not interested in history, even if it is true.  That is because it is different than what they believe.

And the signature petitions being sent to President Obama will be ignored.

This battlefield is in America.  And there, we Japanese must fight like Americans.

We are going to have to get lawyers and sue.  We should sue Peter Koo, City Councilman of Queens New York.  And the following two organizations:

http://www.lookupbook.com/profile/misc-business/ny/flushing/korean-american-civic-empowerment-incorporated

We should research the backers of the other monuments and sue them.

What is the reason for our suit?  Defamation of Character.

Our main points are this:  Japan has paid large amounts of compensation, and offered more.  Korean people want more money, or are unhappy about the manner of payment.

Our second point is that the nation of Japan has not been involved in any such organized prostitution in any way since the war.

It is the Koreans who have had a systematic government sponsored program of prostitution after WWII.  It is the Korean community that at the present time are the greatest traffickers in human prostitutes inside America.

I think it is safe to say, that there are no Japanese prostitutes in America being trafficked by any Japanese organization.

We should sue and demand that the Korean individuals and organizations in America apologize and pay damages to Japan.

Also, American law enforcement is having a difficult time in penetrating the Korean community in America.  We should demand in court that any Korean organization or individual in America that tries to put up such a Comfort Women monument, (I understand that some 22 more are planned) that such persons and groups should prove how they are cooperating with the FBI and local law enforcement .

In the case of Peter Koo above, that would be NYPD.

The fact is, these Koreans in America are hypocrites.  They keep crying how terrible Japan was to them.  Yet they do the same things to their own people in America, at the present time.

Americans do not like hypocrites.

I have detailed the history, and present Korean trafficking of prostitutes in America in my blog.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2012/06/concerning-comfort-women-memorials.html

One more thing.  These Korean people in America, well they are Americans now.  America is a country of many kinds of people.  In New York, you can have street where there is a Jewish synagogue on a street, next door is a Deli run by Palestinians.

In Israel, they are deadly enemies.  Yet in America, while they may not like each other, they tolerate each other.

Americans do not like ethnic groups bringing their ethnic conflicts into America, and fighting those battles out on American soil.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYC7Rjvlmic

I doubt that the Japanese government will be able to hire lawyers to fight this battle in America.  Well, the present Japanese government is a mess.

What we need is Japanese individuals or organizations that can hire a group of American lawyers in America to represent Japan.

Also, we should put articles into American newspapers and magazines.  I am a native English speaker, and I can write.  I do not have any connections to any news organization in America.

Perhaps if one of my readers of this blog had such a connection, then I could write a good article.

In any case, this is how Japan should respond.  We should stop defending the past.  We should use lawyers to attack the crimes Koreans are presently committing in America.

This can work.  If news about the true nature of Korean activity in America comes out, then other organizations, such as Jewish women's groups, groups against prostitution, will cease cooperating with Koreans in attacking Japan.

What about the V-22 Osprey?

Well, I have just heard that the first 12 V-22 Osprey aircraft have been shipped to Japan, to arrive in Iwakuni.  Despite the Governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture's protests.

Recent crashes have raised more fears about the Osprey, and the US government has promised not to fly them until investigations end.  But it seems that they will arrive in Japan anyway.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20120630a8.html#.T_K5B3BmFFy

A crashed Osprey

So what is it about this aircraft?  Well here is an excellent report from the "Wired, Danger Room" website.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/osprey-down/

First of all, let's talk about the Marine Corps.  I, myself, was a US Marine.  And can tell you that the central concept of Marines is amphibious landings.  This is landing on a beach with an assault force.  But not only that, the US Marines have refined this tactic with helicopter assaults 2 or 3 kilometers inland.  This traps any defending force between the beach landing force, and the heli-borne force.

The result is supposed to be that the US wins.  For years, the helicopter used by the Marines has been the CH-46 Sea Knight.

A CH-46 helicopter

I flew on those things when I was a Marine, and they saw a lot of use in Vietnam.  That is how old they are.  There is no question that the Marines need a new aircraft.

So the Marines have been the driving force behind the Osprey, even though the Air Force also uses them.  However, the Marines have special needs.  Their aircraft must fit on an aircraft carrier.

With the CH-46 helicopter, you just fold the rotor blades, very simple.  But the V-22 Osprey has wings, there must be folded.  The engines are on the tips of the wings, so all hydraulic lines must also be folded.  Very complex.

Also, the rotors are too short.  So the engines must generate extra power.  6,200 horsepower, compared to 4,400 horsepower CH-53 helicopter.

And this means the engines run hot.  So hot in fact, that when taking off from an aircraft carrier, the pilot must jiggle the engines back and forth, he cannot keep them over the same spot.  This is because the engine exhaust will melt the steel deck of the ship.

These are very dangerous procedures, with a lot of accident potential.

A landing Osprey causes a lot of hot dust and debris

In a practice landing a few years ago in South Carolina, the Osprey started a brush fire with it's engines.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/06/hot-breathing-osprey-sparks-five-acre-fire/

So what we have here, is a tilt rotor, which is by nature an unstable aircraft design, with engines running very hot.  These hot engines also have high potential for catching fire in flight.

Video of an Osprey crash

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/osprey-down/4/

This link gives us a list of serious defects in the Osprey.

http://www.g2mil.com/V-22safety.htm

I will briefly list these problems:

1  Cannot autorotate.  In the Vietnam war, around 80% of helicopter crashes came on approach to landing.  Autorotation saved half of the crews.  The V-22 Osprey has auto rotated in test conditions, but the test was conducted under very easy conditions.  In realistic flight conditions, autorotation is impossible.

2  Vortex Ring State.  This occurs because of the side by side placement of the rotors.  What this means that in case of serious maneuvering, the aircraft rotors will lose symmetry, creating a vortex, and then uncontrolled flight.  To put it simply, the aircraft will crash.

In a combat situation, you do not fly in straight lines at steady speeds.  The enemy is shooting at you.  You dip and turn all over the place, land your plane, disembark the troops, and get back to base or ship.

Of course, pilots must practice combat maneuver flying.  They will be doing this in Japan.  And aircraft will crash.

3  Tendency to PIO.  I am not sure what this is, but in certain landing conditions, it seems to be a roll that could put the aircraft into a crash.

4 Effects of vibratory loads.  This aircraft will vibrate a lot, and this can cause hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical cables to break and fail.  Also, because of the need to fold the wings in a carrier hanger, the cables must be long and flexible.  This increases complexity, and possibility of failure.

5.  Susceptibility to wake and tip vortices.  Any aircraft flying thorough the air leaves a wake.

In the case of the V-22, there have been three cases where the aircraft went into a sudden roll when encountering the wake from another aircraft.  The FAA recommends 2,000 feet of separation from other aircraft in flight for the Osprey.  Of course this is meaningless for a combat aircraft, so the pilots will practice flying close together.  And some will crash from this.

6  High downwash velocity.  We have mentioned how the engines have started a brush fire while in rotation in preparation for landing.  What this danger is, the engines throw up so much dust and debris, the pilot cannot see where he is in relation to the ground, and crashes.

In any case, from 1991 to 2000, the V-22 proved it's reputation a "widow maker", killing many people.  From 2001 to 2005, it was redesigned.

Another photo of an Osprey crash.

The Marine Corps and the manufacturers now say that the aircraft is safe.

But is this true?  The link below lists many serious accidents since then.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/osprey-down/5/

But the military only considers an accident involving $1 million damage or a fatality serious.  Yet in four or five incidents in the link above, it was only pure luck that the aircraft did not crash.

And the Marines have revised their standards for $2 million as being a serious crash.  And they don't count Air Force accidents with the V-22, and only count accidents in flight, or in intent to flight.  That means a problem that occurs while taxiing or in maintenance is not considered an accident.  So there is no need to record it as an accident.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/osprey-down/6/

So according to the Marines, following incident which occurred in North Carolina on March 27, 2006, was not an accident.  3 men were working on the aircraft when it suddenly took off by itself.  It rose about 6 meters into the air, and crashed back down, with major damage to the right wing and engine.  The 3 crew members were unhurt.  What happened was that the computer flew the plane itself.

But to the Marines, this was not an accident, as there was no human intent to fly the aircraft.  So there is no need to report it.

The Air Force is doing the same thing.  When a very experienced V-22 pilot attempted a landing in Afghanistan on April 9th, 2010, he attempted a landing which the aircraft flight manuals said was possible.  It wasn't, the pilot and three others died.

The flight manuals are written with figures that were the original goals for the aircraft, not what it can actually do.

In effect, they are lying about the problems with this plane.

This is a word game.  Unfortunately, this is still a highly dangerous aircraft.

Test flight routes in Japan

Looking at the proposed flight routes for Japan, my guess is they are for "nap of the earth flying".  What this means, you practice flying in close formation at very low altitudes, about 100 to 200 meters.  You fly up the sides of mountains and over them, and through river valleys.  This is to evade enemy radar.

In the list of defects I have written above, the V-22 Osprey is particularly dangerous in formation flying and at low altitude.  This deployment, and the idea to use the aircraft in this way, is insane.

Is the Japanese government helpless?  And if there is a crash, what will the Americans do?

America has the geographical wide open spaces to conduct such flying.  ANY operation of the such a complex and troubled plane such as the V-22 in Japan is very dangerous.  A crash is only a matter of time.

This plane seems more dangerous than an enemy attack.
