American Christmas memories

What do I remember about Christmas as a kid? Well, the main thing is presents. Presents would be piled under the Christmas tree, and as a kid, that was torture. You see, the presents would be stacked there for as much as two weeks before Christmas. Of course, my brothers and I could not open them until Christmas Eve. That was because relatives would send or bring a present, and under the tree it would go.

So gradually they piled up. My brothers and I would try to peer through the wrapping to see what was inside, or shake the boxes. We rarely ever guessed the truth of what was inside.

Christmas Eve, family would gather, and there would be a big festive dinner. And then we would open the presents! After a while, it was time for bed. But none of us wanted to sleep, because in the night, Santa would come!

And there in the morning, would be even more presents, from Santa under the Christmas tree!

But really home preparations for Christmas started about two weeks earlier. It was then that we would buy a Christmas tree. I was born and grew up in the American Great Lakes region, so there often was snow in December. Christmas trees were sold in the parking lots of shopping malls; one huge section would be roped off for tree sales. After picking out the tree, we would drive home with it in the car.

Once home, the decorating would begin. In my home, we had Christmas ornaments from Germany. The ornaments and many colored lights would go up. Some years an electric model train would be set up to run in a circle around the tree.

Many Americans who are first or second generation in America, mix ethnic Christmas traditions from the old country with American customs.

In our household, Christmas Eve dinner was always Swedish food. Pickled herring, pickled pigs feet, roast pork stuffed with plum, sausages, bean, potato salads. For dessert we would have rice pudding.

Christmas day would be turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and many vegetables. Dessert was pumpkin or fruit mince pie.

Usually, many relatives would help making all the food. And there was a lot of food. In fact, for about a week after Christmas, we would be eating the leftovers.

For weeks before Christmas, there would be many special Christmas shows, for example there was always a Peanuts cartoon show, with the Peanuts characters. I liked “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, which was done with puppets.

Of course, the radio was always playing Christmas music. It is the custom that every American musician must do his or her own version of Christmas songs.

But sometimes, in an effort to be original, people went a little too far in making Christmas music.

Here are some of the Christmas songs that I thought were terrible, and what I liked.

My worst two: 最もひどい2曲です。

Dog Jingle Bells:

Cat Silent Night:

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=A4Vv3GPlm94&feature=related

My favorite two. Yes, in America these songs would sometimes be played in German on the radio.

Stille Nacht

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=4HY2m0MuPqA

O Tannebaum

For an American kid, Christmas is probably the favorite time of year. But there were some kids who were a little bit glum around Christmas. You see, there is one other time of year that one can get a lot of presents. That is on birthdays. Now kids with birthdays in December or January, well the birthday tended to get mixed with Christmas. Parents always promised a double amount of presents, but to those kids, it never seemed to work out that way. Me, in any case my birthday is in February, so I just lucked out!

Anyway, Merry Christmas to everybody!

Americanisms IV

Hot and heavy

Grand Old Lion

Throw in the towel I can’t make any money at this, I guess I will just throw in the towel.”

Rekindle

Move the mountain Move Mountains

Mr. N, I won’t lift a finger for you. You play around too much. If I did help you, my wife would give me hell. You should remember that in Japan, you live in a goldfish bowl.

I won’t lift a finger Nさんは私のヘルプをお願いしています。

Play around

Give me Hell

You live in a goldfish bowl

2008 Sumo Kyushyu Basho

Well! In Sumo we have a new bright shining star, a new Ozeki, Harumafuji!

But first other comments. Again, we only had one Yokozuna. Is Asashyoryu really serious about Sumo? He hardly practices anymore, he seems to be concentrating on his business. If he doesn’t make a decent showing in next year’s January Basho, perhaps there should be some rethinking of his status.

Perhaps the time has come for Kaio. The Grand Old Lion just crumpled under a simple push from Wakanosato. It looked like a soft breeze could push him over. And with Ama coming up to join the Ozeki ranks, the contrast between Ama and the other Ozeki will become even more stark. It might just be time for Chiyotaikai to throw in the towel as well.

Kotooshu, just what is his problem? I think it is all mental. Perhaps he should be allowed to take a fall out of the Ozeki ranks and see if he can rekindle the fire and drive that got him there.

And Harumafuji’s presence might just be the thing to inspire Kotomitsuki to be the Ozeki he can be.

Toyonoshima, Baruto, and Kisenosato should make and exciting Sanyaku bunch this next basho. Aminishiki will have his work cut out for him just to stay there. But Kisenosato will have to even out his performance. He can be spectacular, but he fluctuates too much.

Now Kotoshogiku, here is another uneven Rikishi. He should have made it back up to Sanyaku, he has it in him. But I do not think that is certain. Perhaps Maegashira Hito.

Other Rikishi:

Tochinshin impressed me with his spirit. Even though his record was dismal, he had shot right up to the top of Maegashira, where he gets to battle with the Big Boys. But he gamely hung in there, and said it was a learning experience.

I think he will be back, and that we will see great things from this young man.

Aran from Russia made a decent showing as a Shin Magaeshira, and we finally get to see a decently behaved Russian. I am looking forward to his future career.

My hero Homasho came back after sitting out the entire September Basho due his injury, he had tumbled from Maegashira 2 to 15. It is obvious that his wrist has not completely healed. Yet he worked hard to recover from a terrible record, getting five wins in the last seven days. On Senshyuraku though when faced with Yamamotoyama, he just could not move the mountain, and he ended up with Makekoshi.

I do hope that the Sumo Kyokai will let him hang on at Maegashira 16.

And to Chiyotaikai and Kotooshu, what was that on Senshyuraku, a stage play? With Harumafuji as a new Ozeki, you guys are really going to have to get your act together, or you will end up just being pathetic.

Let's save America!

Hello out there to all my friends in the Blogosphere! I have a proposal. On January 20th, we will have a new President in the United States of America. And unlike the outgoing President, I do believe that Barack Obama does understand the concept of global warming and climate change, and the danger it represents for the survival of the human race.

Now watching Japanese television, and looking through Japanese print media, there are a lot of Japanese firms inventing products that have applications in the fields of energy saving, heat reduction, or resource renewal.

Steadily, Americans are becoming more aware of the necessity of changing the way we live, and moving to more “green” sustainable type of lifestyle.

California will be building a high-speed electric train system like Japan’s own Bullet train.

http://www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov/
Now I am sure JR Tokai will be hot and heavy on the bidding to get in there and build that train.

However, I think that there are many small and medium level companies in Japan that lack contacts in the US. Yet it could be that such a company has a product that could revolutionize some aspect of an industry or human life.

Perhaps I can help. I have been a member of the American Chamber of Commerce Japan for some four years. I have many contacts with American business. And I have lived in Japan for 35 years, and worked extensively in Japanese business.

So just maybe I can help be a bridge between your company and the United States.

So if you have an interesting product or process, please contact me directly. My email is below. And of course you can write in Japanese.
