I came across quite an interesting book the other day. It is titled “1907, In Korea with Marquis Ito” I highly recommend this book. It is in both the original English, and Japanese.
ちょっと前に、本当に面白い本を見つけました。”伊藤侯爵と共に朝鮮にて”。この本をとても推奨します。英語の原文で、日本語に翻訳されています。
私は数年間日韓問題についてブログで書いています。この本で、この問題をもっと深い理解が出来ました。
Mr. Ladd, an American educator and philosopher, made numerous lectures in Japan. He was then invited by his personal friend, the Marquis Ito, to visit Korea.
ラッド氏は、アメリカ人の教育家と哲学者でした。何回も日本で講演をしました。それで、彼の友人伊藤侯爵から、朝鮮へ講演ツアーに招待されました。

He spent several months in Korea giving lectures, and his observations are very illuminating, they help us to understand the problems between Japan and Korea today.
当時朝鮮に数ヵ月滞在して、彼の朝鮮についての観察は、現在の日本とコリアの問題についてとても啓蒙的です。
Mr. Ladd was also witness to much of the political moves in Korea at that time. 1907 was just before the annexation by Japan.
ラッド氏は当時の朝鮮の政治的な動きの目撃者でした。１９０７年は日本併合の直前でした。
Reading Mr. Ladd’s account, I basically came to the conclusion that there were three main things that prevented Korea from dealing with Western incursions into Asia.
ラッド氏の本を読むと、やはり三つの事で当時朝鮮を西洋国のアジア侵略の反動を止めたと言う結論に、達しました。
And these three things dominated Korean society then, preventing full development of a Korean culture, and still hold sway over the Korean mind today.
この三つの事は当時朝鮮の社会で強かった、現在の韓国・北朝鮮で今でも社会を支配しています。
They are Lying, Jealously, and Intrigue.
この三つの事は、虚言、嫉妬と陰謀です。
Even in 1907, Mr. Ladd found that many Koreans had a deep antipathy toward Japan. He was puzzled by this.
１９０７年でも、ラッド氏が当時の朝鮮人は日本にたいして深い嫌悪の気持ちを持っていた事を分かりました。彼がこれは不思議と思いました。
After all, the invasions by Toyotomi Hideyoshi were short. Other than that, there were really no wars. The Mongols and Chinese invaded Korea for much longer periods and did much greater damage, but Koreans ddi not like Japan.
やはり、豊臣秀吉氏の侵略は短いでした。それ以外に、日本と朝鮮の戦争は有りませんでした。モンゴルと中国はもっと長い期間で朝鮮に侵略して、もっと損害を与えましたが、当時朝鮮人が日本を嫌っていました。
I think I can guess part of the answer to that question. In Japan, the Edo era of isolation was perhaps one of the greatest cultural eras in Japanese history.

In this era Kabuki was developed, Sumo was also a great sport, Noh theater was also continued.

And of course the Tale of Genji has been read by many people around the world.
勿論、源氏物語は世界中色々な国々の人々が読んでいます。
Korea never ever produced anything of the sort. I think this is because the rule of the Korean aristocracy, the Yangban, was a deadening hand. They only cared for their own profit, and sought to keep the average Korean in a hopeless Serf like existence.
コリアがこう言う文化的な 事を開発していません。私の意見で、理由は、当時朝鮮のヤンバン、貴族の支配が普通の朝鮮人の独創力を止めました。自分の利益しか大切にしなかったので、普通の朝鮮人が農奴みたいな存在で残る様に努力しました。
Also, Confucianism is very strong in Korea. In Korea, it meant a society locked into rigid unchanging patterns. To the Korean looking at Japan and it’s vibrant social and cultural life, he must have been very irritated.
それと、コリアで儒教は本当に強いです。当時の朝鮮、現在の韓国でも北朝鮮でも、社会が永遠に変化しない形にロックされています。当時の朝鮮人が昔の日本の活気的な文化生活を見て、怒っていたでしょう。
Also, I think geography played a part. Korea is closer to China than Japan. To the Korean, this meant Japan should be less developed than Korea, and regard Korea as a superior nation.
地理も影響が有ったでしょう。日本より、朝鮮半島が中国に近いです。コリアンの考えで、この意味は、日本がコリアより開発・文明がない国が当たり前でした。それと、コリアンの考えで、日本がコリアを上位国と考えるべきです。
Of course, Japan went it’s own way, and until the Meiji revolution, paid little attention to Korea.
しかし、日本が自分の道を作って、明治維新まであまり当時の朝鮮を考えませんでした。
So Koreans developed a strong antipathy for Japan, but at the same time were jealous of Japan, for being what they could not be themselves, in a cultural sense.
それで、コリアの人たちは日本にたいして強い反感を持ちましたが、同時に、日本に嫉妬しました。何故か、文化的に日本はコリアが出来ない存在を作りました。
This type of intense jealous has often stymied Korean efforts. For example, in his book, Mr. Ladd mentions an incident during the Toyotomi Hideyoshi invasions of Korea. The Korean land forces were led by a general Kim Tuk nyung. One of the Japanese Daimyo, or Barons, Konishi Yukinaga, praised the military ability of this general.
この強い嫉妬の気持ちは、コリアの歴史でよく邪魔に成っています。本の中で、ラッド氏は豊臣秀吉氏の侵略の有る事件を書いています。当時朝鮮の陸軍の支配将軍はキム・ツック・ニュングさんでした。大名小西 行長氏がキム将軍の支配を誉めました。
His reward was to be executed by a jealous Korean Royal Court.
しかし、朝鮮宮廷がキム・ツック・ニュング将軍の成功を嫉妬して、彼を死刑にさせました。
Even Admiral Yi Sun Shin, the great Naval hero of Korea in the Toyotomi invasions, was for time reduced to the rank of average soldier by Royal Court intrigue.
海軍将軍李舜臣氏でも、豊臣氏の侵略の海戦の英雄は、当時朝鮮宮廷の陰謀で一時的に普通の兵士に階級を下げられました。
This will surprise my American readers, but there have been a rash of incidents of Korean vandalism in Japan. Americans may think that the Korean campaign about Comfort Women in the US is for justice for women. No, not at all. it is part of a general Korean effort to destroy Japanese culture, and dominate Japan.

Mr. Ladd mentions the problems with Korean lying. At the time, in 1907, just before the annexation to Japan, there were some Japanese magistrates in Korea. There were extremely popular with the Korean people.
ラッド氏は、当時朝鮮人の嘘の問題について書いています。当時、１９０７年に、日本併合の前の時に、当時朝鮮で何人もの日本の行政長官がいました。当時の朝鮮人にとても人気でした。
The reason was, Korean magistrates, who were Korean Yangban aristocrats, would simply rule in favor of whoever gave the largest bribe.

Japanese magistrates were unbribable. Yet there was a serious problem. Koreans, even when they had a strong case and were in the right in a dispute, would lie and exaggerate excessively. So it was necessary to always obtain corroborating evidence from other sources, the testimony of Koreans was worthless.

For those of you in America who have allied with Korea in trying to force Japan to pay compensation for the Comfort Women, this is the true face of Korea. You have stepped into centuries of hatred and jealousy from the Korean side, all of it caused by Korean insecurities rather than reality.
