カリフォルニア大干ばつ California Drought

Well the first thing that comes to mind is, the drought is not only in California.

まず、干ばつはカリフォルニア州だけでは有りません。

In fact, forecasts show continued drought for the American West and Great Plains states.

干ばつ予報で、アメリカの西部と大草原地域に干ばつが続くでしょう。

The Governor of California has announced that the State government has no extra water for cities or agriculture.

San Francisco has a reliable source of water, but the Folsom reservoir, which the State Capitol of Sacramento depends on, is less than 18% full.

What is terrifying about this above picture is, the entire area in the photo should be full of water.  Yet people are playing there, only a small stream is at the bottom.

Here is a really scary picture.  It shows the California snowpack one year ago compared to now.

この写真も怖いです。一年前と現在のカリフォルニア州積雪を見せます。


The huge decrease in snow is quite visible.  The snowpack is 10 to 30 percent of normal.  This is the primary water source for California.

雪の量が減っている事をよく分かります。積雪は、普通の量の１０％から３０％しか有りません。これは、カリフォルニア州の本水源です。

California produces 23% of America’s rice.  Rice uses much water.  And drought is forecast to develop in Louisiana, America’s other rice producing region.

アメリカの米生産は、カリフォルニア州で２３％です。米は大量の水が必要です。アメリカのもう一つの米生産地区、ルイジアナ州にも、干ばつの予報です。

That would mean no rice for Japan under TPP.   I think it is time to forget TPP, and concentrate on how to feed ourselves in Japan.

TPPで、日本に米はアメリカから来ません。やはり、TPPを忘れて、日本農業、魚業の再生に集中した方が良いでしょう？

It is a certainty that America will feed itself before Japan in such an emergency.

緊急の場合、アメリカは日本より自分の国民に食料をあげる事は当たり前です。

Even in areas that are not in drought, there is another problem that is devastating American agriculture.  Too much rain is washing away the soil.

The American government has established “Climate Hubs”.  These are regional offices that are to give warning of sudden catastrophic weather events.  This is so that farmers can prepare, for example, put the cows in shelter.

アメリカ政府は　アメリカ全国で”気候情報センター”を作っています。このセンターはまもなくの天候事件を報告します。それで、農家が準備を出来る、例えば畜牛を小屋に入れる事です。

Well, this is a good step of course.  But many Americans still doubt Climate Change.  They refuse to consider that oil use is the main cause.

勿論、これはいい事です。しかし、数多くのアメリカ人はまだ温暖化を信じていません。石油を利用している社会が温暖化の原因と言う事を考えません。

Well, in any case, since shale oil requires so much water to get out of the ground, with drought it will become impossible.

とにかく、シェルオイルは大量の水が必要だから、これより不可能でしょう。

Look for food prices to skyrocket this year.

今年から食料の値段は急に上がるでしょう。

For Japan, the most important thing for our future is not to bring more foreigners into Japan, but to revitalize Japanese agriculture and fishing, so that our population can survive.

日本の将来の一番大切な事は、これから外国人を日本に住めるようにする事ではなく、日本の農業、漁業の再生です。それで、日本国民が将来に生き残るでしょう。
