American drought: America's decline into darkness begins

American drought has made the news.  Just a few nights ago I saw a report with Furutachi Ichiro of Hodo Station, talking about how the crisis in American agriculture is affecting Japanese food supply.

I wrote about this last April, and my predictions are not only correct, the reality is worse.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2012/04/america-desert-land.html

We have had the massive wildfires.

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/fire/

Of course, the wildfire season is nowhere near over.  There is a strong possibility of fire until fall.

What is worse, in my April blog post I talked about three major centers of American drought.  These were The American West, The Great Plains States, and the American Southeast.

These are centers of extreme drought.

What is new is a massive center of extreme drought extending northeast from the state of Arkansas, through the Mississippi/Ohio river junction through Indiana.  In fact, almost the entire continental US is under at least severe drought according to the US Drought Monitor.

A lake in Indiana.  I grew up near here, normally there is abundant water.  This is a picture of a reservoir for the city of Indianapolis.

So how long will this drought last?  All Summer.

American agriculture has been absolutely devastated.

What rain is forecast is not enough to help.

Poor agriculture in turn means not enough feed for cattle;

There is not enough water for cattle either.

And poultry.  They are dying in the heat.

So.  Is this just a freak event?  Will America recover, and again in the future be a food supplier to the world.

No.

Each of the last three decades has broken heat records, becoming the hottest decade on record.  The 2020 decade looks to be the same.

Please take a look at this link.  It records the snowpack in the American West.  I took the month of May, and rated it from 1995 to 2012.

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/cgibin/westsnow.pl

May 2012   Really Terrible
May 2011   Excellent
May 2010   Very Poor
May 2009   Poor
May 2008   So-so
May 2007   Terrible
May 2006   Poor
May 2005   Good (south) Poor (north)
May 2004   Terrible
May 2003   Very Poor
May 2002   Terrible
May 2001   Really Terrible
May 2000   Really Terrible
May 1999   Very Good
May 1998   Good (south) Poor (north)
May 1997   Good
May 1996   Poor
May 1995   Very Good

Really terrible=とてもひどい Excellent=素晴しい Very Poor=とても悪い Poor=悪い So-so=まあまあ Good=良い Very Good=とても良い

In a couple of entries, I distinguished between north and south for a good reason.  Water from this southern region must support a much greater population in southern California, Las Vegas, and Arizona.

We can see a definite pattern, it is getting much drier.  As I wrote in my post, the snowpack is the main source of water for the American West.

Drought is very destructive of farm soil. To recover, it is obvious.  Water is needed.  However, if we look at the chart of snowpack that I made up above, since 1995, there have only been a few years of really good snowpack.  Terrible conditions are the new normal.

If the next winter produces a lot of snow, final American collapse can be postponed for a few years.  However, looking at the chart above, there 3 or 4 bad years for every good year.  2011 was a very good year, so another good year, by this schedule, will not come until 2013 or 2014.

It will be too late.  One more bad summer, too many soils will have been permanently damaged.  Deserts will extend into the American Midwest, the Great Lakes region.

In any case, even if a lot of snow falls this coming winter, the years after that will be bad.  America will become a desert land no matter what.  This is permanent climate change.

In July of 2011 I wrote about a possible scenario for American collapse by lack of oil.  It could come quickly, a sudden spike in oil prices would make it impossible to supply American cities with food.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2011/07/part-ii-comparing-collapse-of-america.html

The same problem exists with drought.  In 2008, the city of Atlanta came within about 6 weeks of losing all water.  The city was saved by miracle rains.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2008/08/blog-post.html

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.jp/2008/09/part-ii-atlanta-heat-island-part-ii.html

The city has only one reservoir, Lake Lanier.  It came within 6 weeks of running out of water.  Atlanta has a population of 5 million, not to mention industries like Coca-Cola.

My very optimistic American friends ridiculed my worries at the time.  They said things like, well that the Army would truck in water.  Really, does America posses enough water trucks for 5 million people?

Americans believe too much in miracles.  When I talk about drought, they assume water can be brought from somewhere else.

Well, there is one great source of freshwater in North America.  It is in Canada.

Very unfortunately, Americans are destroying it, in their quest to get oil of of tar sands.  Take a look at the photo essay below.

Frankly, if I lived in North America, I don't think I would like to drink that water.  But it seems that for Americans, having gasoline for cars is more important than having drinking water or water for crops.  In any case, infrastructure to move oil from Canada to America is under construction, there is nothing to move water that I know of.  It would take several years, and America no longer has those several years.  In any case, even in Canada, I don't think there is enough water for America's needs.

Here in Japan, we are now going to suffer.  Soybeans are about to become rare, this is a vital part of the Japanese diet.  And this is the lesson we should learn for too dependence on America.  America has made many serious mistakes, now they will pay for it with the disappearance of their civilization.  I really don't see how the Japanese government can still be serious about TPP with America in such awful shape.  It is time for Japanese to quit depending on America, and to guide our own destiny.
