El Nino has brought snow to the Sierra Nevada mountains of California.

But it is not enough. The precipitation is slightly above the yearly average.

What this tells us, there is not enough water for agriculture and people in the southern Central Valley of California.
この情報で、カリフォルニア州セントラル・バレーで、農産業と住民の飲料水が水不足です。
Well, as I have written in my blog, people in California have traditionally used groundwater from aquifers, to make up the difference. Even in good years, when water is abundant in California, some 20% of water used comes from groundwater. In bad years, it is about 70%.
私は以前にブログで書いて、昔から必要な水の埋め合わせをする為に、帯水層の地下水を利用しています。良い年でも、カリフォルニア州で水が沢山有っても、利用している水の２割位は、地下水です。悪い年、雨が降らない場合は、７割です。
So what is the groundwater situation?

In the pdf above, the red color shows a decrease of more than 100 feet, the orange of 10 to 100 feet, the yellow an increase or a decrease of 10 feet, the green an increase of 10 to 100 feet, the blue an increase of more than 100 feet.

This shows in great detail how there is a massive shortage of underground water in California. It has not been replenished by the El Nino.

However, it was an exceptional El Nino which created this much precipitation in California. It is not likely to happen again for several years. The ongoing climate trend for the past few decades has been a climatic shift to deep desert. So there can be little hope of precipitation in California for the next few years.

So I think higher food prices will favor Donald Trump this election. His campaign is short on substance, but he makes many promises, and his supporters are numerous and angry. He articulates the anger of many people.

Talking with a friend the other day, Japan imports 95% of our soybeans and corn, 60% of our wheat from America.

So in Japan, we can expect social chaos soon.
それで、日本で間もなく社会の混乱になるでしょう。
That is all likely to happen in a year or two.
