ミシシッピー川最新情報 Mississippi river updates

At the end of last month, I reported that a large section of the Mississippi river was forecast to shut down to river barge traffic due to drought caused low levels.

先月末、干ばつで水位が低く成って、荷船にミシシッピー川の長い部分の閉鎖予想を書きました。

It was predicted that the river would drop to 9 feet, (2.7 meters) by December 10th.  Now a revised forecast says that that level will be reached by December 29th, and drop another foot (0.3 meter) by January 2nd.

The reason for this is not drought relief.

この理由は、干ばつ救済では有りません。

The Missouri river basin.

ミズーリ川の河川流域です。

What is happening is that water in the Missouri river flood plain is draining back into river.  This is because the Missouri river is at such low levels.

どう言う事ですが、ミズーリ川の氾濫源に有った水が、ミズーリ川に流れています。何故か、ミズーリ川の水位がとても低いです。

And this means further drying out of lands in the Missouri river basin.  If you look at the map of the Missouri river basin, we can see that this is some prime agricultural states of the US, half of Kansas, all of Nebraska and South Dakota, most of North Dakota and Montana.

この事の結果は、ミズーリ川の河川流域に有る州の環境を、もっと乾かします。ミズーリ川の河川流域の地図を見ると、アメリカの主要な農産業州、カンザス州の半分、ネブラスカ州とサウスダコタ州のすべて、ノースダコタ州とモンタナ州のほとんどが入っています。

There, the situation has become very severe.

そこで、状態はとても厳しく成っています。

Alternative transport, such as trains, are simply not available on such short notice.

その替わりの交通、例えば、列車、トラック、そんな急に利用は出来ません。

So there is a three week reprieve, and shipping companies on the river are sending as much cargo as they can.

それで、ミシシッピー川の閉鎖は３週間延期に成って、運送業社は出来るだけ荷物を運んでいます。

But by New Year's, America will still face the same transport nightmare of partial river closure.

しかし、新年に、アメリカは本当の河川輸送悪夢が来ます。
