Recently, anyone watching the news on planet earth knows that America is in deep financial trouble. How did this happen? Well I am not financial expert, but let me try a few words. Let’s start with greed and over optimism.

Japan, along with China, Russia, and European countries, has much investment in America. We cannot afford to let America collapse, yet I think it is within our rights to push the American government to watch the financial operations of its companies more closely in the future. And of course, expensive wars with no solution simply waste money.

In Japan we have similar situation with the Hakken phenomena. While this employment practice will not bring financial collapse like America’s disaster, we are creating a large class of young people who have no hope of escaping Hakken employment. They cannot marry and they cannot lead normal lives, they live as slaves.

I think that in both America and Japan, we need much stronger government oversight to prevent such excesses.

However, the truth is that in America legal battles are now being fought by Christian Fundamentalist groups in more than ten states to have Bible based education taught in public schools. Many schools are using texts that have text content very much like those two paragraphs.

At this moment, we are in the middle of a Presidential campaign in the United States of America. As everyone knows, the Republican candidate, Senator John McCain, has made a controversial choice for his Vice President, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska.
現在、アメリカ合衆国は大統領選挙運動中です。共和党マケイン上院議員は副大統領候補として論争的な人を選んで、アラスカ州ペイリン知事がマスコミで大きい話題に成っています。
Let me explain why. At first, I was extremely surprised. How could he expect such an inexperienced woman to attract dissatisfied Hillary Clinton votes? But a closer look shows that that was not the main reason. The main reason is to pull the Christian right wing voters to his cause. And in that it seems that John McCain has succeeded.
マケイン上院議員の選択した理由を説明したいと思います。本当に不満しているヒラリークリントン上院議員のサポーターを共和党へ引っぱる事が可能だと思いましたか？しかし、よく見ると、これは基本的な理由では有りません。その主な理由は、キリスト教の右派サポーターを引く為にでした。そして、成功したかも知れません。

Present Christian Fundamentalism began around 1975. America had lost the Vietnam War. During the war, a mass protest movement arose to protest the war. This movement also protested what many people considered to be traditional bedrock values of American society. Conservative people felt lost, that the country was going to fall into ruin.
現在の基本主義キリスト教運動は、１９７５年から始まりました。その時にアメリカはベトナム戦争を負けたばかりです。ベトナム戦争中、アメリカ国内で大きな戦争反対運動が現れていました。多数のアメリカ人の考えで、この戦争反対運動はアメリカの社会基本的な価値観も反対しました。保守派のアメリカ人は迷っている様な気持ちに成って、国がまもなく滅びる心配が有りました。
In particular, it seemed that the people protesting the war did not believe in the role of the military in American society, believed in free sex without marriage, condoned homosexuality, and took illegal drugs.
特に、この戦争反対運動の人達は、アメリカ社会の軍隊立場を反対でしたし、結婚以外のフリーセックスと同性愛者を許します。それと、違反麻薬を飲んでいます。
These things scared conservative Americans. It was at this time that the present type of Fundamentalist Christianity began to arise. What was new was that these Fundamentalist churches pulled religion into every aspect of daily life. According to these churches, all aspects of daily life could, and should be interpreted according to the Bible. Not only that, Fundamentalist Christians are working to recreate America as a Fundamentalist Christian society. To their thinking, older mainline churches are not true Christian churches. This includes Lutherans, Methodists, Unitarians, Catholics, and many others.
この戦争反対運動の人達の活動を見たアメリカ保守派が怖く成りました。この時に、アメリカ基本主義キリスト教が出てきました。この時までの伝統あるアメリカキリスト教会より、この基本主義キリスト教教会が日常生活に宗教を紹介しました。この考えで、信者の毎日の活動は、聖書の教えでするべきと信じています。それと、基本主義キリスト教信者たちは、アメリカ全国を自分たちの教えと人々が自分たちと同じ考えになるように動力しています。彼達の考えで、もっと古いキリスト教教会は本当のキリスト教では有りません。ルーテル派、メソジスト派、ユニテリアン主義、カトリック教会は基本主義キリスト教の考えですべて不正の教えと信じています。
Since that time, they have worked hard to change America into their type of religious society. They have done this by joining the government at local levels. Then they attempt to pass Christian laws in their communities. The American Republican party has many of these Christian workers. Many staffers in the offices of Senators and Congressmen are Fundamentalist Christians. Christian Bible colleges, operated by Fundamentalist Christians, make a special effort to send their people to be staff for lawmakers. They then try to take over the personnel section for staffers, and only recruit other Fundamentalist Christians for staff positions. Particularly they have achieved great power in the present Bush administration. They are working very hard to change the laws and customs of America to what they believe in. I believe that in choosing his Vice President, Senator McCain had no choice but to obey them. In America, we call this struggle the “Culture Wars”.

Abortion. In 1973, a law that enabled women in every state in America to have an abortion if they wished was passed. This is one of the centers of the Religious Right’s activity. They wish to change the law to make it impossible for any American woman to have an abortion for any reason, except in extreme case medical emergencies where the mother may die.
中絶。アメリカには、１９７３年アメリカ各州でアメリカ人女性は中絶を出来る様な法律が出来ました。これは、右派宗教が強く集中している所です。右派宗教団体は、この法律を破る目標があります。どんな理由でも、中絶は全国で違反にしたいです。医学的に、女性の命は危険の場合だけ許す可能性が有るかも知れません。
They believe the Bible justifies them in this, that all lives are precious and must be saved.

Of course, they do not believe in any form of sexual education in schools. To young people, they preach abstinence, to married couples contraceptive use is forbidden. They wish to forbid the sale of contraceptive products. To their thinking, God will decide how many children you will have. Sex outside of marriage is forbidden.
勿論、学校でセックス教育は禁止です。若い人達にセックス禁欲を教えて、夫婦でも避妊薬かコンドームを利用する事は禁止です。この基本主義キリスト教団体は避妊薬かコンドームを全国販売でも禁止したいです。彼達の考えで、どんな家族の子供の数は神様に任せるしか有りません。勿論、結婚以外のセックスは禁止です。
In the case of Sarah Palin’s daughter, it is forgiven because the two kids will get married. This is then regarded as obedience to God.

Recently some states in America have experimented with the idea of some sort of legal relationship for homosexual couples. Of course the Fundamentalist Christians are very against this. They regard homosexuality as a disease to be cured, and maintain many groups who specialize in trying to force homosexual people into heterosexual relationships.

Another major important thing for them is the Darwinian theory of evolution. They believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old, that dinosaurs and humans existed together in the Garden of Eden. At that time, the dinosaurs were all vegetarian. However, when man sinned by eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, some dinosaurs became carnivores. Of course, all dinosaurs died in the Great Biblical flood. That is why we find so many fossils today.

There is no reference in the Bible of humans and dinosaurs living together. There is mention of “Leviathan” and “Behemoth” these are simply described as large creatures. The Fundamentalist Christians understand this to mean dinosaurs. Also, they believe that they can pull many children into Christian fundamentalism by talking about dinosaurs, as dinosaurs are popular with children.
聖書で、恐竜と人間の共同生活の話は有りません。ベヒモスとレヴィアタンは聖書に入っていますが、ただでかい生物の様な説明が有ります。基本主義キリスト教信者の考えで、この二つの小さい話は、人間と恐竜の共同存在証明です。このキリスト教信者は、もう一つの提案が有ります。世界の子供達は、恐竜に興味が有ります。恐竜の話題を利用して、その子供達を基本主義に引っぱりたいと計画しています。
Ideas like those above are actually taught as Biology class in Christian schools, and in public schools where Fundamentalist Christians have strong influence. But having their own Christian schools is not enough for them. In their thinking, all public schools in America must teach their ideas, and the teaching of Darwinian Evolutionary theory is to be forbidden. To achieve this goal, Christian Fundamentalists are trying to get as many of their people in political power in America as possible.

Sarah Palin has a very short resume. But when she was mayor of the town of Wasilla in Alaska, she thought about banning books from the town library. It is not specified which books she did not like, but Fundamentalist Christians do not like any book that has any reference to sex, homosexuality, also Harry Potter books are evil in their opinion. This is because the central theme of those books is magic. According to the Bible, magic is evil.

To their thinking, all such books must be banned from America.

These are only a few of their ideas. However, for them to live their own ideas separately in American society is not their goal. To their thinking, all Americans must live in their way by Bible principles. Americans who are not of their beliefs will become second class citizens.
これは、基本主義キリスト教信者の考えの紹介だけです。他にいっぱいの計画が有ります。彼達はアメリカ社会の中で、自分達の別世界を作るのは目標では有りません。本当の目標は、アメリカ全国が基本主義キリスト教に変わる事です。その宗教に入らないアメリカ人は、２級国民に成ります。
Even though Sarah Palin has very little experience in government, her Christian beliefs are very fundamentalist. To the Christian Fundamentalists, that is fine. One does not need experience, only belief.

Also, the End Times is very much a part of their philosophy. They spend much time studying The Book of Revelations.

They believe that a final war will come in our lifetimes in the Middle East, and it will be nuclear. They believe that Russia and Iran are the evil nations that will invade Israel and start this war. Jesus will then come and take all true believers to Heaven in The Rapture. All people who do not believe as they do will spend the rest of eternity in hell and torment.

Some of them think that the United States should start this war to help Jesus hurry up. And of course, they do not see any point in worrying about Global Warming, since Jesus will take us to heaven soon. They do not see any reason to stop using so much resources and to stop creating such pollution, to them it will not matter. The Bush administration has had deep consultations with such people on Middle Eastern foreign policy.

I personally think abortion should be a personal decision between a woman and her doctor. I believe the public schools should have be very good at teaching science, especially evolution.

And I certainly do not believe in nuclear war.

These people are afraid, they are trying to use only the Bible as a way to find certainty. But it does not work that way. Along that road, lies madness. A person should not only study religion, we must also understand the world we live in.

現在の基本主義キリスト教運動は、１９７５年から始まりました。その時にアメリカはベトナム戦争を負けたばかりです。ベトナム戦争中、アメリカ国内で大きな戦争反対運動が現れていました。多数のアメリカ人の考えで、この戦争反対運動はアメリカの社会基本的な価値観も反対しました。保守派のアメリカ人は迷っている様な気持ちに成って、国がまもなく滅びる心配が有りました。
In particular, it seemed that the people protesting the war did not believe in the role of the military in American society, believed in free sex without marriage, condoned homosexuality, and took illegal drugs.
特に、この戦争反対運動の人達は、アメリカ社会の軍隊立場を反対でしたし、結婚以外のフリーセックスと同性愛者を許します。それと、違反麻薬を飲んでいます。
These things scared conservative Americans. It was at this time that the present type of Fundamentalist Christianity began to arise. What was new was that these Fundamentalist churches pulled religion into every aspect of daily life. According to these churches, all aspects of daily life could, and should be interpreted according to the Bible. Not only that, Fundamentalist Christians are working to recreate America as a Fundamentalist Christian society. To their thinking, older mainline churches are not true Christian churches. This includes Lutherans, Methodists, Unitarians, Catholics, and many others.
この戦争反対運動の人達の活動を見たアメリカ保守派が怖く成りました。この時に、アメリカ基本主義キリスト教が出てきました。この時までの伝統あるアメリカキリスト教会より、この基本主義キリスト教教会が日常生活に宗教を紹介しました。この考えで、信者の毎日の活動は、聖書の教えでするべきと信じています。それと、基本主義キリスト教信者たちは、アメリカ全国を自分たちの教えと人々が自分たちと同じ考えになるように動力しています。彼達の考えで、もっと古いキリスト教教会は本当のキリスト教では有りません。ルーテル派、メソジスト派、ユニテリアン主義、カトリック教会は基本主義キリスト教の考えですべて不正の教えと信じています。
Since that time, they have worked hard to change America into their type of religious society. They have done this by joining the government at local levels. Then they attempt to pass Christian laws in their communities. The American Republican party has many of these Christian workers. Many staffers in the offices of Senators and Congressmen are Fundamentalist Christians. Christian Bible colleges, operated by Fundamentalist Christians, make a special effort to send their people to be staff for lawmakers. They then try to take over the personnel section for staffers, and only recruit other Fundamentalist Christians for staff positions. Particularly they have achieved great power in the present Bush administration. They are working very hard to change the laws and customs of America to what they believe in. I believe that in choosing his Vice President, Senator McCain had no choice but to obey them. In America, we call this struggle the “Culture Wars”.
その時から、基本主義キリスト教信者は、アメリカを自分達の様な宗教国に変えようと努力しています。アメリカのローカルな選挙に立候補して、その街に基本主義キリスト教の法律を造ります。アメリカ共和党は基本主義キリスト教信者が多いです。上院議員、下院議員事務所のスタッフは、基本主義キリスト教信者が特に多いです。基本主義キリスト教の聖書大学は、卒業生を議員スタッフに狙って加入させます。それで、議員事務所の人事部の位置を取って、他の仕事に基本主義キリスト教信者だけを雇います。現在、ブッシュ政権で、基本主義キリスト教信者はとても力を持っています。彼達は、アメリカを自分たちの様な宗教国に変えると頑張っています。私の考えで、マケイン上院議員は基本主義キリスト教の圧力で副大統領候補としてペイリン知事を選びました。アメリカでは、私たちがこの争い“文化戦争”と呼んでいます。

Abortion. In 1973, a law that enabled women in every state in America to have an abortion if they wished was passed. This is one of the centers of the Religious Right’s activity. They wish to change the law to make it impossible for any American woman to have an abortion for any reason, except in extreme case medical emergencies where the mother may die.
中絶。アメリカには、１９７３年アメリカ各州でアメリカ人女性は中絶を出来る様な法律が出来ました。これは、右派宗教が強く集中している所です。右派宗教団体は、この法律を破る目標があります。どんな理由でも、中絶は全国で違反にしたいです。医学的に、女性の命は危険の場合だけ許す可能性が有るかも知れません。
They believe the Bible justifies them in this, that all lives are precious and must be saved.
基本主義キリスト教の考えで、中絶を禁止する事は聖書から来たと信じています。どんな命でも大切で、神様の為に救わなければ成りません。
Of course, they do not believe in any form of sexual education in schools. To young people, they preach abstinence, to married couples contraceptive use is forbidden. They wish to forbid the sale of contraceptive products. To their thinking, God will decide how many children you will have. Sex outside of marriage is forbidden.
勿論、学校でセックス教育は禁止です。若い人達にセックス禁欲を教えて、夫婦でも避妊薬かコンドームを利用する事は禁止です。この基本主義キリスト教団体は避妊薬かコンドームを全国販売でも禁止したいです。彼達の考えで、どんな家族の子供の数は神様に任せるしか有りません。勿論、結婚以外のセックスは禁止です。
In the case of Sarah Palin’s daughter, it is forgiven because the two kids will get married. This is then regarded as obedience to God.
ペイリン知事の娘の場合に、結婚すると子供を中絶しないで生むから、許されています。それは神様に従ってと考えられています。
Recently some states in America have experimented with the idea of some sort of legal relationship for homosexual couples. Of course the Fundamentalist Christians are very against this. They regard homosexuality as a disease to be cured, and maintain many groups who specialize in trying to force homosexual people into heterosexual relationships.
最近、アメリカでいくつかの州は同性愛者二人の関係を法的に何とか認める事を研究中です。基本主義キリスト教信者は、同性愛者の存在に反対です。彼達の考で、同性愛者は病気の状態で、治すべきと思っています。基本主義キリスト教教会は、よく同性愛者を異性愛者に変わる為のカウンセリングセンターなど行っています。このセンターの目標は、同性愛者を男女結婚にする様にです。基本主義キリスト教の考えで、同性愛者を彼達の考えに変身させる事は成功と思っています。
Another major important thing for them is the Darwinian theory of evolution. They believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old, that dinosaurs and humans existed together in the Garden of Eden. At that time, the dinosaurs were all vegetarian. However, when man sinned by eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, some dinosaurs became carnivores. Of course, all dinosaurs died in the Great Biblical flood. That is why we find so many fossils today.
基本主義キリスト教信者のもう一つの大切な話題は、ダーウィン進化論理です。基本主義者の考えで、６，０００年前に神様が一週間で地球を造りました。エデンの園で、恐竜と人間は共同生活をしました。その時に、恐竜達は全部菜食主義でした。人間は知恵の樹の食禁止果物を食べて、 罪を理解して、いくつかの恐竜も肉食主義に成りました。大洪水で恐竜達は全部死にました。その理由で、現在、私たちは化石をいっぱい見つけます。
There is no reference in the Bible of humans and dinosaurs living together. There is mention of “Leviathan” and “Behemoth” these are simply described as large creatures. The Fundamentalist Christians understand this to mean dinosaurs. Also, they believe that they can pull many children into Christian fundamentalism by talking about dinosaurs, as dinosaurs are popular with children.
聖書で、恐竜と人間の共同生活の話は有りません。ベヒモスとレヴィアタンは聖書に入っていますが、ただでかい生物の様な説明が有ります。基本主義キリスト教信者の考えで、この二つの小さい話は、人間と恐竜の共同存在証明です。このキリスト教信者は、もう一つの提案が有ります。世界の子供達は、恐竜に興味が有ります。恐竜の話題を利用して、その子供達を基本主義に引っぱりたいと計画しています。
Ideas like those above are actually taught as Biology class in Christian schools, and in public schools where Fundamentalist Christians have strong influence. But having their own Christian schools is not enough for them. In their thinking, all public schools in America must teach their ideas, and the teaching of Darwinian Evolutionary theory is to be forbidden. To achieve this goal, Christian Fundamentalists are trying to get as many of their people in political power in America as possible.
この上記で書いた事は、アメリカのキリスト教学校で、生物学の授業で教えられています。公立学校でも、基本主義キリスト教の人々が力が有ったら、その聖書通りの教科書を使っています。基本主義信者の考えで、アメリカ全国の公立学校を彼達の聖書通りに教育しないと、基本主義キリスト教に対して差別と思っています。この差別をなくす為に、アメリカ全国の公立学校で、ダーウィン進化論理の教育を禁止しないと満足しません。この目標の為に、基本主義信者は出来るだけ自分のメンバーを政治家として立候補させます。
Sarah Palin has a very short resume. But when she was mayor of the town of Wasilla in Alaska, she thought about banning books from the town library. It is not specified which books she did not like, but Fundamentalist Christians do not like any book that has any reference to sex, homosexuality, also Harry Potter books are evil in their opinion. This is because the central theme of those books is magic. According to the Bible, magic is evil.

To their thinking, all such books must be banned from America.

These are only a few of their ideas. However, for them to live their own ideas separately in American society is not their goal. To their thinking, all Americans must live in their way by Bible principles. Americans who are not of their beliefs will become second class citizens.
これは、基本主義キリスト教信者の考えの紹介だけです。他にいっぱいの計画が有ります。彼達はアメリカ社会の中で、自分達の別世界を作るのは目標では有りません。本当の目標は、アメリカ全国が基本主義キリスト教に変わる事です。その宗教に入らないアメリカ人は、２級国民に成ります。
Even though Sarah Palin has very little experience in government, her Christian beliefs are very fundamentalist. To the Christian Fundamentalists, that is fine. One does not need experience, only belief.

Also, the End Times is very much a part of their philosophy. They spend much time studying The Book of Revelations.

They believe that a final war will come in our lifetimes in the Middle East, and it will be nuclear. They believe that Russia and Iran are the evil nations that will invade Israel and start this war. Jesus will then come and take all true believers to Heaven in The Rapture. All people who do not believe as they do will spend the rest of eternity in hell and torment.
基本主義キリスト教の考えで、世界の最後の戦争は中近東で、核兵器の戦争と考えています。彼達の考えで、ロシアとイランは悪国で、イスラエルに侵略して、戦争を始めます。その戦争の最後で、イエスは地球に戻ってきて、本当の信者を天国に引き上げます。これを携挙と言います。基本主義キリスト教を信じない人達が、永遠に地獄的な苦しみに成ります。
Some of them think that the United States should start this war to help Jesus hurry up. And of course, they do not see any point in worrying about Global Warming, since Jesus will take us to heaven soon. They do not see any reason to stop using so much resources and to stop creating such pollution, to them it will not matter. The Bush administration has had deep consultations with such people on Middle Eastern foreign policy.
いくつかの信者の考えで、イエスを手伝う為に、アメリカはそろそろその核兵器戦争を自分から始めるべきと信じています。勿論、信者達はまもなく天国へ行きますから、地球温暖化を心配しなくていいです。天国へ行きますから、アメリカ人は好きな様に地球資源を利用していい、公害もあっても関係が有りません。８年間のブッシュ政権で、ブッシュ大統領は中近東政策、その他の話題で相談しています。
They believe this is so written in the Bible, there fore it is absolute truth.

Christian Fundamentalist represent about 42% of the American population at this time.
現在、基本主義キリスト教信者は、アメリカ人口の４２％です。
I personally think abortion should be a personal decision between a woman and her doctor. I believe the public schools should have be very good at teaching science, especially evolution.
私の考えで、中絶するかしないかはその女性と彼女の医者さんの問題です。公立学校は理科を深く教えるべき、特に進化論理をです。
And I certainly do not believe in nuclear war.
それと、私は核兵器戦争がとても嫌いです。
These people are afraid, they are trying to use only the Bible as a way to find certainty. But it does not work that way. Along that road, lies madness. A person should not only study religion, we must also understand the world we live in.
この基本主義者達は世界を怖がって、聖書だけで確かな人生の道を探しています。しかし、それだけはだめです。その道は人間が気を狂うだけです。宗教だけを勉強する事は人間に耐えられません。人間は現在に存在する世界も理解をしなければ成りません。

アトランタ市のヒートアイランド Atlanta Heat Island Part II
Here, I will talk a little more about hurricanes, and the massive drought in the southeastern United States. In a previous post, I mentioned my belief that the people of the American southeast will have to eliminate the Atlanta heat island to prevent the region from turning to desert.
ここで、大西洋のハリケーンとアメリカ東南部の大干ばつを書きたいと思います。以前に、私はアメリカ東南部の干ばつで砂漠に成る危機について書きました。それと、現在の気候を守る為に、アトランタ市のヒートアイランドをなくすしか方法が有りません。
Well, in the latter half of the month of August, the people of Atlanta did have a great hope. This was Hurricane Fay. Many people thought that it would break the drought and fill Lake Lanier, the primary source of Atlanta water.
８月後半で、アトランタ市民は一つの大きな望みが有りました。その望みはハリケーンフェイでした。多数のアトランタ市民の考えで、このハリケーンフェイはアトランタ市分水嶺に大雨を振らして、干ばつを終わらせます。
In fact, its projected track did have it hitting Atlanta head on. The storm, after leaving Cuba, was forecast to go straight north, parallel to the west coast of the Florida peninsula, and continue north, hitting the city of Atlanta directly.
正直に言うと、天気予報でアトランタに直接に当たります。このハリケーンはキューバを超えて、フロリダ半島の西海岸に平行に進んで、直接北へ行って、アトランタ市に当たります。
But something strange happened. I have included a link below that gives you the actual course of Hurricane Fay.

As the Hurricane approached south Florida, it began to cross the peninsula to the east. It then reached the Atlantic Ocean, where it stopped for several days. Then it suddenly turned 90 degrees and headed straight west. Atlanta got very little rain, the drought is still strong. This kind of 90-degree turn is very unusual in a hurricane. It is my feeling that the massive amount of hot air from the Atlanta heat island forced Hurricane Fay to change course.
ハリケーンフェイは南フロリダの近くに来ると、だんだん東へフロリダ半島を渡り始めました。大西洋に戻って、数日間その場所で止まりました。それで、突然９０度回って直接西へ進みました。ハリケーンと台風の進行で、こう言う９０度回りはとても珍しいです。私の考えで、アトランタ市のヒートアイランドの暑い大空気で、ハリケーンフェイは新しい進行へ移動させられました。
This is a very bad sign for Atlanta. Very little rain is falling naturally. Hurricanes are being pushed away by the heat island. In any case, simply hoping for a Hurricane is like hoping for a miracle. Hurricanes are rare events, and unpredictable. And the heat island is stronger than the Hurricane.
これはアトランタ市のとても危険な信号です。自然で雨量は本当に少ないです。ヒートアイランドでハリケーンも来なく成りました。とにかく、ハリケーンで干ばつを終わらせる事を望むのは奇跡待ちと同じです。ハリケーンは珍しいし、予想しにくいです。それと、アトランタ市のヒートアイランドはハリケーンより強いです。
If Atlantan people do not change their lifestyle soon, and adopt measures to reduce heat, I feel the region will soon become desert.

The danger of nuclear war in Georgia グルジア戦争と核兵器戦争の危機
In 1962, the United States of America and the Soviet Union came very close to nuclear war over the Cuban missile crisis. I was a young child in Chicago, and I remember the church bells. In the event of a nuclear attack, all the church bells of the city were to be rung as a warning. That would mean nuclear missile strike in 20 minutes or so from Cuba. I remember the system being tested, and asking my father if we were going to die.
１９６２年にアメリカ合衆国とソ連はキューバ危機で核兵器戦争が始まりそうでした。私はシカゴに住んでいた子供でした。一つの思い出は教会の鐘でした。核兵器戦争が始まったら、シカゴ市内の教会の鐘は全部同時に警告として鳴らす計画が有りました。その警告の意味が、約２０分後ソ連核兵器ミサイルがシカゴに当たります。私の思い出はその教会が鐘警告テストをした時、お父さんに、“私たちは死ぬの？”と聞きました。
20 minutes is not enough time to do much more than say goodbye to your family and few friends. So far, in human history, that incident is the closest the human race has been to major nuclear war.
２０分はわずかの時間ですが、家族、友達の数人に、“さよなら”を言う時間しか有りません。人類の歴史で、このキューバ危機事件は核兵器戦争で一番危険でした。
Until August 23rd of 2008. On August 8th, the army of The Republic of Georgia invaded South Ossetia, a territory under Russian protection. The Georgian army attacked Russian troops based there on a peace keeping operation. Russia responded, and we all know the result.
しかし、２００８年８月２３日に危険な事件が有りました。８月８日にグルジア軍がロシアに守られていた南オセチアに攻撃しました。グルギア軍が在南オセチアロシア平和維持活動中部隊にも攻撃しました。ロシア軍隊が反動しましたが、結果は皆さんが分かっています。
However, the great danger of nuclear war came about August 23rd. By the 22nd of August Russian forces began to withdraw from Georgian territory. However, hardliners in America were not happy. US warships were sent to the Black Sea, and ordered to dock in the harbor of Poti in Georgia. This would have been very dangerous, as there were still small units of Russian troops very near Poti. This would have created a very dangerous situation, with Russian army troops and US Navy sailors in close contact. The possibility of someone accidentally firing a weapon was very high, If Russian troops and US Navy ships had traded fire, I do not think we could have stopped things before they eventually escalated to full scale nuclear war. Most of human civilization in the northern hemisphere of the planet would have been destroyed.
しかし、その核兵器戦争の危機は、８月２３日でした。８月２２日からロシア軍はグルジアから撤退を始めました。アメリカ右派政治家はロシアの反動に怒りました。その右派政治家の命令で、アメリカ軍艦をグルジアまで進行しました。その軍艦の目標は、グルジアのポチ港で停泊する事でした。しかし、ポチの近くにロシア陸軍の偵察隊はまだ居ました。この状態はとても危険です。アメリカ兵とロシア兵はお互い近い所に居ます。どちらの兵隊も間違いで武器を使う可能性が高かったです 。戦いが始まったら、核兵器戦争まで拡大する可能性が高いです。地球北半球の人類文明は滅びる事に成ったでしょう。
Very fortunately, the United States Navy High Command intervened, and the US ships docked at Batumi, far to the south in Georgia and away from Russian troops. A war was avoided.
何故私たちは助かりましたか？アメリカ海軍総司令部は力を出して、その軍艦はポチ港ではなく、バトゥーミ港に停泊しました。このバトゥーミ港にロシア軍は居ませんでした。これで、世界核兵器戦争に成りませんでした。
So who was responsible for The US ships in the Black Sea? The Navy did not want to go there. In my opinion, it was two men who created this problem, Vice President Richard Cheney and Senator John McCain.
アメリカ軍艦の黒海への進行は、だれの責任でしたか？アメリカ海軍総司令部は、この進行に反対でした。私の意見では二人です。その二人は、チェイニー副大統領とマケイン上院議員だと思います。
In fact, Senator McCain has deep ties to Georgia, his chief advisor, Randy Scheunemann, was a formal lobbyist for the Georgian government. President Saakashvili himself claims to have been in frequent telephone contact with Senator McCain during this crisis.

In any case, we are very lucky that major war was averted between Russia and America.

Now Senator McCain has made a very strange choice for his Vice Presidential candidate. I am very sorry to say, but Governor Palin of Alaska has virtually no experience at all other than being a housewife. I do not see how she can be the Number Two in the strongest nation on earth.
現在マケイン上院議員は、自分の副大統領候補にとても変わった選択をしました。残念ですが、ペイリンアラスカ知事は２年しか経験が有りません。その以外の仕事は、小さい町の市長と主婦です。この経験で、アメリカと言う大きな国で二番目のリーダーを出来ないと思います。
I think the only reason that Senator McCain chose Governor Palin, is to use her attraction to Fundamentalist Christians. The thing is, if Senator McCain were to become President, and he became too ill to do his job, Governor Palin would become President of the United States.

I am very surprised and shocked to see Senator McCain make two such dangerous decisions, pushing for a war between the United States and Russia, and in picking a totally inexperienced woman as his number two.

US warships were sent to the Black Sea, and ordered to dock in the harbor of Poti in Georgia. This would have been very dangerous, as there were still small units of Russian troops very near Poti. This would have created a very dangerous situation, with Russian army troops and US Navy sailors in close contact. The possibility of someone accidentally firing a weapon was very high, If Russian troops and US Navy ships had traded fire, I do not think we could have stopped things before they eventually escalated to full scale nuclear war. Most of human civilization in the northern hemisphere of the planet would have been destroyed.

アメリカと温暖化 America and Global Warming
It is slowly nearing the end of August. This summer has again been an ordeal of sweltering hot days, with extreme thunderstorms and flooding. And every year, it gets worse.
日本では、だんだん８月末です。今年の夏は長い期間うだる様な暑さの日々、とても強い雷雨嵐、と洪水が有りました。
Japanese people are quite aware of extreme weather, and that it is connected to Global Warming. Yet Americans refuse to believe in Global Warming. Well Americans do understand that it is happening, but they will not look at how serious it is. If you discuss the increase of severe weather with Americans, they almost always say that it is a cycle, and will eventually return to normal. Many Americans feel that Global Warming may have some effect in 300 years or more, but not now.
日本人は、現在、日本の極端な天気が温暖化の結果とよく分かっています。しかし、アメリカ人はまだ温暖化を信じていません。まあ、温暖化は始まっていると分かるけれど、どのくらい大変な問題と考えません。普通のアメリカ人と温暖化問題を話しましたら、アメリカ人はいつも現在の極端な天気はただの一巡です。そろそろ普通の天気が戻ります。たくさんのアメリカ人の考えで、温暖化問題は、もしかしたら人間の生活に影響が有るかも知れません。しかし、その影響はあと３００年ぐらいです。今ではありません。

As a person who has grown up in America, I have noticed two great changes in weather patterns.

One is the American Midwestern states have been getting much wetter, and that the American southeast has been getting much drier. I have been watching this event ever week for the last 18 months, and the trend is unmistakable. It is happening.
I believe the cause is the city of Atlanta. Atlanta is a large sprawl of a city covering a wide area. What used to be forest and farmland has now become asphalt parking lots, and shopping malls with black tar roofs. This entire area has become a heat island. This heat island creates a huge mass of hot air, and this air mass pushes rain to the south in the Gulf of Mexico. The rain then swings around the Atlanta heat island and up the Mississippi valley, where it rains heavily in the Midwestern states.

Last year, the Okefenokee Swamp, along the state border of Georgia and Florida, had major fires. It was too dry. This was a dangerous warning sign, yet it did not receive much coverage in the American media.

Yet the people of Atlanta complained loudly, and the restrictions were lifted.

In the Midwest, there is now flooding every year. In 1993 and this year 2008, the flooding was very serious. Those years were called 150-year floods, meaning we have floods like that only every 150 years. We have now had two floods like that only 13 years apart.

The basic weather patterns have changed for the North American continent. In my opinion, the American southeast is changing from natural forestland suitable for extensive agriculture, to a desert climate. Most of the people now living there will have to move. The American southeast has no infrastructure to move a large amount of water from one area to another. In any case, the entire region is short of water.

The American southwest on the other hand does have a very extensive infrastructure to move water. There are many canals and aqueducts. In fact, Los Angeles draws some of its water from aquifers as far as 1,500 kilometers away, from the Ogallala aquifer across the Rocky Mountains.
アメリカ南西部は、とてもはば広い水移動のインフラが有ります。水道と運河はいっぱい有ります。ロサンゼルスは１，５００キロ離れている帯水層から水を取ります。その一つはOgallala帯水層、その水はロサンゼルスへ移動しながらロッキー山脈を渡ります。
The American Southwest is natural desert. There are even plans to move water from the Great Lakes region, over 2,500 kilometers away. This is because water sources in the American southwest are being over stressed by the increasing population, and disappearing because of global warming.

Of course, the Great Lakes region is against the idea.

America has had a very luxurious life style since World War II. Everybody wants a nice big house with a swimming pool, and several cars to drive. Yet this is no longer possible. I have not been to Las Vegas, but I have seen photos. Many of the hotels have large pools for decoration only. Many others have large pools for swimming parties. And of course large fountains.

Las Vegas is natural deep desert. There is no water there naturally. In the near future, Las Vegas will have to drastically change its life style. As will all the people in Arizona and Los Angeles. Swimming pools at the very least will disappear.
ラスヴェガスは 自然に深い砂漠です。自然に、水は全然有りません。近い将来に、ラスヴェガスに住んでいる人達の生活は、大きい変化が有るでしょう。アリゾナ州とロサンゼルスの生活も変わります。少なくても、プールは無く成るでしょう。
The southeast in my opinion can still be saved from turning to desert. Roof gardens and water absorbent pavement will do a lot to help reduce the heat island effect of Atlanta. Even growing vines over parking lots could be a big help. But until the Atlanta heat island is reduced, rain will not naturally return to the American southeast. And then the southeast has a high possibility of turning into a desert that cannot be inhabited by human beings.

何故私は大相撲を好き？ So why do I like Sumo?
When I first started watching Sumo, about 5 years ago, it simply seemed to be two guys going at each other.
５年くらい前に、私はお相撲を見始めました。最初見た時に、ただ二人のでかい男の試合と思いました。
Then if you watch about a week or so, you begin to see how the various techniques are used. And then you start to watch who will get Kachi-Koshi or not.
一週間ぐらい見ると、色々な決まり手が少しずつ分かります。だんだん、どの力士が勝ち越しに成るかと考え始めます。
By this time, you are hooked.
この所でもう中毒に成っています。
I cannot think of a sport in America that so totally becomes your life. A Sumo Rikishi does nothing but Sumo for his entire professional life. When you are beginning in the lower ranks, you are totally focused on trying to rise in rank, and to serve your superiors. This is made easier by the fact that all Rikishi live together in communal style in a Beya.
私の生まれは、アメリカです。お相撲に入門すると、力士の日常生活はすべて相撲です。アメリカでは、生活がすべてのスポーツは有りません。番付の低い位置にいる力士の集中する事は、自分の位置が上がるのと上の力士の世話をします。力士は全員が相撲部屋で共同生活をしていますので、相撲に集中しやすいです。
Once you rise to the higher ranks, you are still attending special events, and meeting with sponsors. Sumo becomes a way of life, and how you act off the Dohyo is just as important.
幕内に上がると、特別なイベント、スポンサーの付き合いとか色々の事で忙しいです。力士の生活はすべて相撲です。日常のマナーはとても大切です。
It is one aspect of Japanese life that has been unaffected by contact with the West.
江戸時代から相撲は変わっていません。明治維新から、日本社会で色々な所で西洋の影響が入ってきましたが、相撲はまだ純粋です。

Sumo is a very visual sport, with much ceremony with ancient history. To watch the entrance ceremony of the Juryo and Makuuchi, with everyone in their Kessho Mawashi, and the special entrance of the Yokozuna, is a grand spectacle.
相撲を見るのはとても楽しいです。古代時代から残っている儀式はいっぱい有ります。十両、幕内、横綱の土俵入りで、力士たちは化粧まわしを付けます。素晴しい光景です。
I recommend to everybody reading this, if you have never seen a Sumo tournament go. You will be pleasantly surprised.

５年くらい前に、私はお相撲を見始めました。最初見た時に、ただ二人のでかい男の試合と思いました。
Then if you watch about a week or so, you begin to see how the various techniques are used. And then you start to watch who will get Kachi-Koshi or not.
一週間ぐらい見ると、色々な決まり手が少しずつ分かります。だんだん、どの力士が勝ち越しに成るかと考え始めます。
By this time, you are hooked.
この所でもう中毒に成っています。
I cannot think of a sport in America that so totally becomes your life. A Sumo Rikishi does nothing but Sumo for his entire professional life. When you are beginning in the lower ranks, you are totally focused on trying to rise in rank, and to serve your superiors. This is made easier by the fact that all Rikishi live together in communal style in a Beya.
私の生まれは、アメリカです。お相撲に入門すると、力士の日常生活はすべて相撲です。アメリカでは、生活がすべてのスポーツは有りません。番付の低い位置にいる力士の集中する事は、自分の位置が上がるのと上の力士の世話をします。力士は全員が相撲部屋で共同生活をしていますので、相撲に集中しやすいです。
Once you rise to the higher ranks, you are still attending special events, and meeting with sponsors. Sumo becomes a way of life, and how you act off the Dohyo is just as important.
幕内に上がると、特別なイベント、スポンサーの付き合いとか色々の事で忙しいです。力士の生活はすべて相撲です。日常のマナーはとても大切です。
It is one aspect of Japanese life that has been unaffected by contact with the West.
江戸時代から相撲は変わっていません。明治維新から、日本社会で色々な所で西洋の影響が入ってきましたが、相撲はまだ純粋です。

大相撲名古屋場所 Sumo! The Nagoya Basho
Well, in my profile I have written that I am Sumo fan and that is true. So let me make a few comments on the recent Nagoya Basho.
私は、自分のプロフィールで、大相撲大好きと書きました。この前の名古屋場所をちょっとお話しましょう。
OK, there are a few bright spots, but the first thing that jumps to mind is Yokozuna Asashoryu. 2 losses in the first two bouts and he is out. From rumors that I have read in the media, He hardly practiced at all. He seems to have been much more concerned that the summer tour be held in Mongolia, than his performance at the Nagoya Basho. I really think he should have practiced more instead of worrying about a summer tour in Mongolia. He should think about that after the Basho.
名古屋場所でいい事がいくつか有るけれど、まず横綱朝青龍を思い出します。最初の五つの取り組みで２回負けましたか？それで休場？新聞で読んだ噂で、あまり稽古をしなかったそうです。 名古屋場所よりモンゴル夏巡業の方に集中したみたいです。モンゴルの夏巡業を考えるより、まず名古屋場所の為に一生懸命稽古をした方がよかったと思います。場所が終わってから、夏巡業を考えるべきです。
To be a great Rikishi, it does not only mean that you have enough power to overwhelm your opponents. You must have dignity and bearing. In Japanese we call this Hinkaku. And here Asashoryu falls short.
素晴しい力士は相手に勝つ力だけではなく、威厳とbearingが必要です。日本語でこれは品格と言います。この品格の所で朝青龍は足りません。
Hakuho on the other hand, has the bearing of a great Yokozuna. He achieved Zenshyo, or a complete string of wins for the tournament. And his wins were all quality Sumo. One thing I like about Hakuho, once he has pushed his opponent over the Tawara, if he is able to, he will stop his opponents fall. That is extremely polite, and shows that he truly has Hinkaku. I think he is on the way to becoming a great Yokozuna.
しかし白鵬は素晴しい横綱に成るでしょう。名古屋場所で全勝でした。彼の取り組みは全部いい相撲でした。私が白鵬の好きな理由の一つは、取り組みに勝つ時に、相手力士が俵の外に出て、白鵬がよく手を出して相手の力士を落ちる事を止めます。とても丁寧です。やはりこれは品格です。白鵬は偉く成るでしょう。
Another example of awful Sumo was Russian born Wakanoho. When my wife and I watch Sumo on NHK, we listen to the English commentary. And the English commentators call him “Waka-no-no” for his style of Sumo. I remember his bout with Ama. In my mind, he did not beat Ama by any kind of Sumo. He merely fell on top of Ama, and got lucky. He does way too much Henka. And what is all that hand dance he does at the Tachi-ai? He has way too much ego, he should do much more basic practice. Another Rikishi famous for his Henka, Hokutoriki, shared the same dismal performance of 4 wins and 11 losses with Wakanoho. While Hokutoriki recently is not doing Henka, in the past he did it too much, so he never developed strong Sumo technique.
一つのひどい相撲のやり方は、ロシア生まれ若ノ鵬です。私と妻は相撲をNHKで見る時に、英語のコメンテーターを聞きます。英語のコメンテーターは彼の相撲を見て、ペットネームで“若ノノ”と呼びます。安馬の取り組みを覚えています。若ノ鵬は勝ったけれど、私の考えで相撲の決まり手で勝っていません。安馬の上に落ちて、運がよかっただけです。変化をやりすぎです。それと、立ち合いの時に何か変な手動きをします。私はその手動きを見ると、彼はうぬぼれが有りすぎに感じます。もっと基本的な稽古をするべきと思います。もう一人の変化で有名な力士は北勝力です。若ノ鵬と同じの４勝１１敗でした。最近の北勝力はそんなに変化をしないけれど、以前やりすぎでしたから、強い相撲を開発していません。
Breaking News: Russian born Sumo Rikishi Wakanoho is presently being questioned by police, over the fact that he was found to be in possession of marijuana. It is highly likely that he will expelled from Sumo, and deported from Japan. I understand that his Oyakata let him live alone outside the Beya. This is a mistake. I am not at all against Rikishi from other countries doing Sumo, I think it is great. But they must follow all the rules, and live in the same way as any other Rikishi. I do not think foreign Rikishi should have any special treatment. Special treatment only encourages egoism, and does not build great Rikishi.

Now let us look at the Ozeki. When the Nagoya Basho began, there was speculation that Kotooshu could possibly become a Yokozuna. Well his final result of 9 wins and 6 losses show us that his previous Yusho was, for the time at least, a one-time wonder.
それでは大関を見ましょう。名古屋場所は始まる前から、琴欧州が横綱に成れるかどうかの推測が有りました。しかし９勝６敗の結果で、やはり、前場所優勝は特別でした。横綱に成るのはまだ早いです。
Now Kaio and Chiyotaikai. Kaio’s performance was OK, and Chiyotaikai did get rid of his Kadoban. But I recall that Chiyotaikai did several Henka, and in one bout he lost, I remember him flying over the Tawara like an airplane. These two guys seem to be only able to alternate between Kyujyo and Kadoban, and then to scrape by with a bare minimum Kachi-koshi. Come on guys, maybe it is time to retire.
それでは、魁皇と千代大海です。魁皇はまあまあでした。千代大海は角番をなくしました。千代大海は数回変化で勝ちました。一つの取り組み、千代大海は負けた時、俵の上を飛行機の様に飛びました。何か、魁皇と千代大海は休場と角番に成って、次の場所もまたぎりぎり勝ち越しをします。もしかしたら、引退の方がいいかも知れません。
Kotomitsuki did well with 11 wins and 4 losses, but can he keep it up? The Ozeki are supposed to make life hard for the Yokozuna. But these days the Ozeki seem to be concerned with mere survival.
琴光喜は１１勝４敗でよかったけれど、次の場所でそのくらい出来ますか？大関は横綱に圧力を掛けるべき力士です。しかし最近、大関は生き残る事ばかり集中しています。
In the Sanyaku, Kisenosato and Kotoshogiku both ended up with Make-koshi. I think these guys have it in them, but they must find the fire in the belly.
三役では、稀勢の里と琴奬菊両方が負け越しでした。私の考えで、この二人は将来大関にでも成れると思いますが、もっと強い心を創らなければいけません。
Then we have Ama and Toyonoshima. Here is some excitement. I was particularly impressed by Toyonoshima’s win over Yokozuna Asashoryu. Way to go Toyonoshima! He certain to become Sekiwake, and next Basho we can look at two strong Sekiwake battling it out to become Ozeki.
次は、安馬と豊ノ島です。この二人を見ると刺激に成ります。初日で豊ノ島は朝青龍に勝った取り組みがとても印象に残りました。豊ノ島もこれから頑張ってほしい！豊ノ島は次の場所で関脇に成るでしょう。この二人の強い関脇の大関に成る戦いを期待しています。
In the Maegashira ranks, my favorite Rikishi, Homasho did OK at 9 wins and 6 losses, but his last win was by a Henka. That is not quality Sumo. I think he has the ability to get into Sanyaku, but no more Henka please. Toyohibiki got an exciting 10 wins. But I was also very impressed with the quality of Tochinoshin. Even though he only got 8 wins, I think we can expect more of him.
前頭の方で、私の一番好きな力士、豊真将は9勝６敗でしたが、最後の取り組みは変化で勝ちました。変化はいい決まり手ではないですから、もう豊真勝は変化しないでほしいです。豊響は素晴しい１０勝をしました。でも、栃ノ心の相撲が印象になりました。８勝だけでも、これからだんだん番付を上がるでしょう。
As for most the rest of the guys, well they need to work harder. But really, maybe it is time for some of the Ozeki to retire. This could fire up some of the Maegashira to go for Ozeki and Sanyaku, and make for more exciting Sumo.
他の力士の方にはもっと頑張ってほしいです。しかし、 ベテラン大関は引退する時間です。前頭の力士が大関や三役に成る可能性がはっきり見えたら、 頑張る動機を与えるかも知れません。
