There is a lot of speculation in the American media about what President elect Barack Obama will do once he assumes office. Most of the speculation concentrates on the wars in the Middle East, or on the American economy.
For his own part, President elect Obama has remained silent. He says that the United States of America has only one President at time, and until January 20th, George Bush is still President. This is a correct approach. However, he has gradually been appointing members of his cabinet, and appointing the heads of various agencies.
Many people in the US, in the media and the Blogosphere are worried. They see Barack Obama picking former Clinton officials, and even some Republicans. They worry that President elect Obama will not make a great change over his predecessor.
For my own part, I am quite pleased. All across the board, I see President elect Obama picking smart intelligent people. This is quite a difference from the Bush administration, where the only criteria for a government job was loyalty to George Bush.
But I am especially pleased with Barack Obama’s picks in regard to Science. Professor John Holdren, of Harvard University, will be the White House Science Advisor. He is highly critical of the Bush administration approach to Global Warming, and science in general. Basically, the Bush administration policy towards Climate Change can be summed up in the phrase that “President Bush put his head in the sand”.
Americans worry much about military affairs and the possibility of terrorism. But I will say that Global Warming is much more dangerous than terrorism. Terrorism is a minor problem that should be handled by police forces of various nations cooperatively. President Bush made a serious mistake in starting wars with major military forces. He has created more chaos, instead of solving problems.
However Global Warming is here right now. Last summer in Japan we experienced heavy sudden rainstorms, which we called in Japanese “Guerrilla Downpours”. These are not at all normal. Where I grew up in the American Great Lakes region, I was used to heavy thunderstorms. When I moved to Japan 35 years ago, I was surprised that Japan did not have such storms.
Well that was 35 years ago. I live in Suginami ward Tokyo. Last summer I was awestruck by a huge thunderhead that I could see moving across central Saitama prefecture. From Suginami. There was something like three lightning strikes a second. It looked like that thundercloud scene in Tom Cruise’s movie, “The War of the Worlds”. I watched for some 20 minutes, and it was very frightening.
Well Global Warming should be frightening. If we do nothing, human life will be impossible on Earth within 100 years. We have already passed the danger point with greenhouse gases of 350 ppm. We are now at 385 ppm.
What this means is that simply cutting our emissions of greenhouse gases will not save us. Thanks to George Bush, it is too late.
Yet there is hope, and here is where I admire and support Barack Obama. We are going to have to Bio Engineer our atmosphere. And we do have strong possibilities; one idea I like is massive algae farms to capture Carbon Dioxide.
I have written much about how America is in trouble. Well you don’t have to read my blog, just pick up any newspaper; you will see that America has serious problems. The Bush administration was a total disaster. In fact, it can be said that George Bush tried to destroy science to advance Fundamentalist Christianity. But to fight Global Warming, we will need the science powerhouse of America. And there still is a lot of scientific knowledge and resources in America. George Bush could not destroy all American knowledge.
The planet Earth does still have Hope, and his name is Barack Obama.
Put his head in the sand

American Christmas memories
What do I remember about Christmas as a kid? Well, the main thing is presents. Presents would be piled under the Christmas tree, and as a kid, that was torture. You see, the presents would be stacked there for as much as two weeks before Christmas. Of course, my brothers and I could not open them until Christmas Eve. That was because relatives would send or bring a present, and under the tree it would go.
So gradually they piled up. My brothers and I would try to peer through the wrapping to see what was inside, or shake the boxes. We rarely ever guessed the truth of what was inside.
Christmas Eve, family would gather, and there would be a big festive dinner. And then we would open the presents! After a while, it was time for bed. But none of us wanted to sleep, because in the night, Santa would come!
And there in the morning, would be even more presents, from Santa under the Christmas tree!
But really home preparations for Christmas started about two weeks earlier. It was then that we would buy a Christmas tree. I was born and grew up in the American Great Lakes region, so there often was snow in December. Christmas trees were sold in the parking lots of shopping malls; one huge section would be roped off for tree sales. After picking out the tree, we would drive home with it in the car.
Once home, the decorating would begin. In my home, we had Christmas ornaments from Germany. The ornaments and many colored lights would go up. Some years an electric model train would be set up to run in a circle around the tree.
Many Americans who are first or second generation in America, mix ethnic Christmas traditions from the old country with American customs.
In our household, Christmas Eve dinner was always Swedish food. Pickled herring, pickled pigs feet, roast pork stuffed with plum, sausages, bean, potato salads. For dessert we would have rice pudding.
Christmas day would be turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and many vegetables. Dessert was pumpkin or fruit mince pie.
Usually, many relatives would help making all the food. And there was a lot of food. In fact, for about a week after Christmas, we would be eating the leftovers.
For weeks before Christmas, there would be many special Christmas shows, for example there was always a Peanuts cartoon show, with the Peanuts characters. I liked “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, which was done with puppets.
Of course, the radio was always playing Christmas music. It is the custom that every American musician must do his or her own version of Christmas songs.
But sometimes, in an effort to be original, people went a little too far in making Christmas music.
Here are some of the Christmas songs that I thought were terrible, and what I liked.
My worst two: 最もひどい2曲です。
Dog Jingle Bells:

Cat Silent Night:

My favorite two. Yes, in America these songs would sometimes be played in German on the radio.
Stille Nacht

O Tannebaum

Now kids with birthdays in December or January, well the birthday tended to get mixed with Christmas. Parents always promised a double amount of presents, but to those kids, it never seemed to work out that way. Me, in any case my birthday is in February, so I just lucked out!

Grand Old Lion
Throw in the towel I can’t make any money at this, I guess I will just throw in the towel.”
Rekindle
Move the mountain Move Mountains
Mr. N, I won’t lift a finger for you. You play around too much. If I did help you, my wife would give me hell. You should remember that in Japan, you live in a goldfish bowl.
I won’t lift a finger Nさんは私のヘルプをお願いしています。
Play around
Give me Hell
You live in a goldfish bowl

2008 Sumo Kyushyu Basho
Well! In Sumo we have a new bright shining star, a new Ozeki, Harumafuji!
But first other comments. Again, we only had one Yokozuna. Is Asashyoryu really serious about Sumo? He hardly practices anymore, he seems to be concentrating on his business. If he doesn’t make a decent showing in next year’s January Basho, perhaps there should be some rethinking of his status.
Perhaps the time has come for Kaio. The Grand Old Lion just crumpled under a simple push from Wakanosato. It looked like a soft breeze could push him over. And with Ama coming up to join the Ozeki ranks, the contrast between Ama and the other Ozeki will become even more stark. It might just be time for Chiyotaikai to throw in the towel as well.
Kotooshu, just what is his problem? I think it is all mental. Perhaps he should be allowed to take a fall out of the Ozeki ranks and see if he can rekindle the fire and drive that got him there.
And Harumafuji’s presence might just be the thing to inspire Kotomitsuki to be the Ozeki he can be.
Toyonoshima, Baruto, and Kisenosato should make and exciting Sanyaku bunch this next basho. Aminishiki will have his work cut out for him just to stay there. But Kisenosato will have to even out his performance. He can be spectacular, but he fluctuates too much.
Now Kotoshogiku, here is another uneven Rikishi. He should have made it back up to Sanyaku, he has it in him. But I do not think that is certain. Perhaps Maegashira Hito.
Other Rikishi:
Tochinshin impressed me with his spirit. Even though his record was dismal, he had shot right up to the top of Maegashira, where he gets to battle with the Big Boys. But he gamely hung in there, and said it was a learning experience.
I think he will be back, and that we will see great things from this young man.
Aran from Russia made a decent showing as a Shin Magaeshira, and we finally get to see a decently behaved Russian. I am looking forward to his future career.
My hero Homasho came back after sitting out the entire September Basho due his injury, he had tumbled from Maegashira 2 to 15. It is obvious that his wrist has not completely healed. Yet he worked hard to recover from a terrible record, getting five wins in the last seven days. On Senshyuraku though when faced with Yamamotoyama, he just could not move the mountain, and he ended up with Makekoshi.
I do hope that the Sumo Kyokai will let him hang on at Maegashira 16.
And to Chiyotaikai and Kotooshu, what was that on Senshyuraku, a stage play? With Harumafuji as a new Ozeki, you guys are really going to have to get your act together, or you will end up just being pathetic.

Let's save America!
Hello out there to all my friends in the Blogosphere! I have a proposal. On January 20th, we will have a new President in the United States of America. And unlike the outgoing President, I do believe that Barack Obama does understand the concept of global warming and climate change, and the danger it represents for the survival of the human race.
Now watching Japanese television, and looking through Japanese print media, there are a lot of Japanese firms inventing products that have applications in the fields of energy saving, heat reduction, or resource renewal.
Steadily, Americans are becoming more aware of the necessity of changing the way we live, and moving to more “green” sustainable type of lifestyle.
California will be building a high-speed electric train system like Japan’s own Bullet train.

Now I am sure JR Tokai will be hot and heavy on the bidding to get in there and build that train.
However, I think that there are many small and medium level companies in Japan that lack contacts in the US. Yet it could be that such a company has a product that could revolutionize some aspect of an industry or human life.
Perhaps I can help. I have been a member of the American Chamber of Commerce Japan for some four years. I have many contacts with American business. And I have lived in Japan for 35 years, and worked extensively in Japanese business.
So just maybe I can help be a bridge between your company and the United States.
So if you have an interesting product or process, please contact me directly. My email is below. And of course you can write in Japanese.

What now for America?
Yesterday, history was made in America. Even ten years ago, it is doubtful that a man with a Black father and a White mother could have been elected President. Yet it has happened. The extreme Right in American politics, who have brought so much disaster to the world, are out the door.
From now on, these rightists, Neocons and Christian Fundamentalists, will be dogging the actions of the Obama administration every step of the way. They will seek to confuse and destroy. Last night was a Great Victory. We should all rightly be happy and proud. Yet the battle for America is not over. We have an expensive and bloated military, chock full of weapon systems we don’t need. We have a creaking domestic infrastructure. We have a triple storm of Climate Change, Peak Oil, and Financial Collapse staring us in the face.
It was not a Democratic administration that decided to pretend that Climate Change does not exist. It was not a Democratic administration that tried to solve the problem of disappearing oil supplies by invading the oil producing countries of the Middle East. It was not a Democratic administration that decided to let Financial Institutions regulate themselves.
It was George Bush, the figurehead for the Neocons who thought that America should rule the world by fire and sword. Well Climate Change is here. In the United States, hurricanes are becoming stronger and stronger. Every year brings more terrible floods in the American Mid West. Drought has taken hold in the Southeast and Southwest. Our armies have invaded two countries in the Middle East, and the result is horrible farce. We have killed hundreds of thousands of people. And we did not get the oil. And by letting the firms on Wall Street regulate themselves, they simply indulged themselves in an orgy of excessive greed that still threatens to destroy America.
Ladies and Gentlemen, what begins now is not simply the Battle for America; it is the Battle to Save the Planet. Some people might say, “Hey Max, you live in Japan, why should you care what happens in America?” Well in Japan we have an expression: “When America sneezes, Japan catches a cold.” Japanese people understand the interdependence of the Japanese/American relationship very well.
Whatever happens now in America will have a deep impact on all nations and peoples, across the globe.
These problems of Climate Change, Oil Supply Depletion, and Financial Collapse are not exclusive to America. They are affecting every country in the world. And America has not been paying attention.
Yet now with Barack Obama as the President Elect of the United States, we have a chance, we have hope. But let us all remember, the coming Battle for America is really the Battle to save the World. If we fail, the prospects for the planet are dire, it is doubtful that any nation can serve as a refuge.
So we must not fail.
