On the Wisconsin demonstrations

I have recently been doing a large translation job, so I have not had to time to blog like I should. So here are some quick posts.

On Wisconsin.

I used to live here in my high school days, about 45 kilometers north of Madison. It is a beautiful state, very rural, famed for it's dairy farms. In the winter, it is about minus 40 degrees.

Since the people are usually so mild mannered, I was caught by surprise by the massive demonstrations. Some 70,000 people have come. They have world wide support, as evidenced by pizza orders for the protesters from across America and around the world.

However what the issue in Wisconsin is really about, it is a battle to break the American Democratic party.

http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/02/whats-happening-wisconsin-explained
As the above link explains, Governor Walker, who assumed office in January 2011, was funded by the Koch brothers, the creators of the Tea Party. The goal of the Koch brothers is to destroy the unions, a source of Democratic power. Similar anti union actions are planned for the States of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Some 5,000 people have already begun demonstrating in Ohio.

In my blog, I described how the Koch brothers created the Tea Party.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2010/09/american-freedom-and-the-tea-party.html
They are bussing in Tea Party members as counter demonstrators to the pro union people.

http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/02/wisconsin-tea-partiers-breitbart-fight-unions

This is a sure recipe for Civil War. Life is hard in Wisconsin. Unemployment is high. Governor Walker stopped the Obama plan for high speed rail in Wisconsin, which would have created 5,500 immediate jobs. He said it was a waste of money.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/28/wisconsin-laid-off-and-left-out_n_828617.html
High Speed rail is essential if America is survive the coming disappearance of oil. The Koch brothers are one of several extremely rich people trying to control America. And they do not believe in either Peak Oil or Global Warming, they think these are lies by the left.

http://motherjones.com/politics/2010/12/how-oligarchs-took-america

Life in America is very unequal, the Koch brothers and their compatriots wish to make it more so. This is simple massive greed. However, I do not think the Koch brothers are very intelligent.

If you destroy the Middle Class, you create the beginnings of revolution. What we are seeing in the Middle East is revolution against extreme economic inequality.

The Koch brothers and other people like them are working hard to create such a society in America.

At this time, there have been no clashes in Wisconsin between Tea party people and Union supporters. As I have written, it is very cold in Wisconsin in February.

However 70,000 people in Wisconsin demonstrated to show their anger at the inequality of their lives. In the summer, it will be hot, and almost all Americans have guns.

It seems as if the Koch brothers are in a hurry to start a Civil War.

As a military historian, I will say a warning to them. Wars are much easier to start than stop.

http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/11-20-2002-30718.asp
http://www.balkanium.com/forum/showthread.php/1621-American-ignorance-of-the-world

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/03/world/middleeast/03cnd-iran.html

http://www.krysstal.com/democracy_whyusa01.html

Egypt

Well, in three weeks the government of Egypt has changed. What this marks is, a truly seismic shift in how the world is organized. And it marks the end of the American Empire.

The American government has been sent into panic over this. Secretary of State recalled all US ambassadors from all over the world for an emergency meeting.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/31/clinton-ambassador-meeting_n_816146.html

What was said at that meeting, I don't know, but at a guess, I would say it was panicked instructions to the ambassadors, find out what is going on in your countries and stop any revolutions.

The thing is, I don't think the Americans have any clue what is going on, and the American government is terrified. But it is their fault. The American government has long purged intelligent and capable people about the Middle East from the State Department and government service.

There are two main culprits here, AIPAC and the American Neocons. AIPAC did not want any official in the US government who did not unquestionably support Israel. With the Neocons, particularly under President George Bush, they did not anybody who was not a yes man, who did not have absolute loyalty to President Bush.

http://justworldnews.org/archives/004137.html
So now, when President Obama needs serious informed advice as to what is going on, there is no one who can tell him.

The US has a history of supporting corrupt leaders in various countries. The US supported the Tunisian leader, Ben Ali, even though it knew he was corrupt.

http://www.juancole.com/2011/01/new-wikileaks-us-knew-tunisian-gov-rotten-corrupt-supported-ben-ali-anyway.html
In Japan, the US had always supported the LDP, even despite many scandals.

This kind of thinking dates from the Cold War. Back then, both the United States and the Soviet Union were in competition for influence in countries around the world. It was felt a great danger by American officials if the Soviet Union could gain influence in a country.

America tried hard to build relations with various nations. And then, America would build a base, or negotiate agreements for the American military to use facilities in those countries.

Of course, the American government would turn a blind eye to any corruption, or if the government concerned was a dictatorship or not. The phrase used by government officials at the time was "That leader might be a bastard, but he is our bastard".

With the disappearance of the Soviet Union in 1991, the need for such a policy also disappeared. But unfortunately, the primary focus of American relations has remained the building military bases in more countries, and trusting in corrupt leaders to control their various populations.

And with little knowledge of Arab people, The American government is shocked by this revolution. Secretary of State Clinton has particularly panicked. She has made many remarks to the point that, there is some hidden radical Islamist movement that is in charge of the Egyptian revolution.

http://www.juancole.com/2011/02/meyer-clintons-fear-mongering-about-egyptian-chaos.html

This kind of thinking fits exactly with the concept of American Exceptionalism. Americans believe that they are giving the "Great Gift" of the American lifestyle and Democracy to various countries.

But they truly do not study the life of those countries. Americans who do speak their languages and understand these nations will have different opinions, are ignored. So when something like this revolution in Egypt happens, they are shocked and confused.

In this crisis, the US position shifted from President Obama demanding Egyptian Mubarak's immediate departure to a phased situation where General Suleiman will rule until President Mubarak retires in September. Then back again to Mubarak's leaving. And General Tantawi is in charge.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/margolis/margolis226.html

What a mess, America is dazed and confused. What the Americans cannot understand is that this is a popular revolution. The people of Egypt just do not want Mubarak anymore. They are angry because there are no economic oppourtunities. They are angry at the Egyptian government's attitude towards Israel on treatment of the Palestinian people, and the Egyptian government's continued kowtowing towards America.

The situation here is very similar to America's misunderstanding of the Iranian revolution in 1979. Iranians just did not want to be Americanized. The Shah of Iran of Iran, who was acting under American influence, tried to bring American ways of business and culture into Iran.

When the people of Iran did not want this, the Shah tortured them and killed them. The result was revolution. To Americans, this was seen as a rejection of American culture. To American thinking, American culture is the best in the world, if you reject it, you must be an enemy.

But Americans still cannot understand that the Iranian people want to live in their traditional way. Americans feel that if the present Islamic government of Iran were destroyed, Iranians would love to live the American lifestyle.

That is why there is a continued series of sanctions and threats of war against Iran. That is why America pressured Japan to give up oil field development in Iran some years ago. And this is why all of a sudden Secretary of State Clinton is announcing strong support for demonstrators in Iran, even though she was reluctant to support Egyptian demonstrators. The general American thinking is that Islamic government is preventing the Iranian people from enjoying American culture.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12460170

And that is why America cannot understand that this revolution in Egypt is a popular revolution. American government officials and most media keep speculating on what radical Islamic leaders are leading the revolution. They simply cannot understand that there is no such group, it is a spontaneous popular revolution.

America has long supported Israel, no matter how harshly Israel treats the Palestinian people. This is part of the cause for the present trouble.

What will be the result of this Egyptian revolution?

Well, this is likely the end of American influence in the Middle East. In nations all across the region, America has put it's support behind small groups of rulers who are corrupt and dictatorial. All of these leaders worry about revolution in their own countries.

So revolution is likely to spread. America will be forced to withdraw from the region.

What about Japan in all this? We should be careful not to get drawn into this American disaster. It is a result of American mistakes. They are likely to make some panicked demand that Japan send the Jieitai or something.

But I think the best course for Japan is to sit back and wait. This is too big, there is no way Japan can help America out of this mess.

Is TPP safe?

There has been a lot of talk about Japan joining the Trans Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership. However, I must say that I am very concerned about this. I do not think this agreement is safe for Japan.

最近、日本のマスコミで、TPP(環太平洋戦略的経済連携協定)に参加するか?

Please take a look at this link.

Please click on the "日本語” in the Languages section on the left side. There are many things that worry me about this agreement. But I think the two most immediately frightening are these two economic activities: ”金融” and ”電子取引”.

Now, on this blog I have often written that I am a military historian. I am, I have a very deep knowledge of military history. Of economic affairs, my knowledge is not so deep. But out of necessity, I have been studying.

And by studying military history, you learn that leaders can often be very stupid. And I think that the financial leaders of America have made some incredible mistakes.

Well let's start with the rogues gallery of American financial institutions in trouble.

Perhaps these former bankers, now government officials, realize that America needs financial help from outside America to survive.

I can understand the urgency America feels to conclude TPP with Japan. American financial institutions are desperately in need of money. Japanese financial institutions have large amounts of capital, the savings of Japanese people.

I can understand that American financial leaders would look at free access to these funds as a possible salvation.

But two points. I do not think that Japan, for all the money we have, really has enough to help America out it's current problems.

Secondly, I have seen no indication that the US government is attempting to discipline or regulate American financial institutions.

So I am very wary of free access for American financial institutions to Japan's finances. All of the capital of Japan could disappear into an American Black Hole.

I see no reason for Japan to join TPP at this time. We should sit back for a few years and see if America can put their financial house back in order.

The American Civil War begins

The first shots of the American Civil War have been fired on January 9th, 8th locally, in Tucson Arizona.

In a previous post, I described a possible scenario how Civil War in America could start.

http://tokyomaxtalks.blogspot.com/2010/07/shape-of-american-civil-war.html

I wrote about Americans rising in anger over the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. And I wrote that they would begin to kill people out of intolerance. I wrote how that Christian Fundamentalism encourages intolerance of gays, and that gays might well be the victim of violence.

Well, the situation in the Gulf of Mexico is still awful, but people have not yet risen in revolt.

http://bpoilslick.blogspot.com/2010/12/gulf-war-wages-on.html

Yet, with the shooting of Congresswoman Giffords in Arizona on January 9th, 8th locally, I do think we have had the first shots in the American Civil War fired.

She was shot because she voted for Health Care. And for the American Right, especially the Christian Right, Federal Health Insurance has always been as much as an evil as homosexuality.

Now I think that the person who shot her acted alone. I do not see any evidence of of direction by other people, or evidence of someone on the American political Right ordering this person to attack Congresswoman Giffords.

However, for the last couple of decades in America, political discourse has become increasingly violent.

Here is popular TV and radio host Glenn Beck threatening to kill Michael Moore on his show.

Radio Host Rush Limbaugh says that Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi are terrorists.

http://www.juancole.com/2011/01/naw-theres-been-no-right-wing-extreme-rhetoric.html

In the mid term elections last year, Sharron Angle, the Tea Party candidate for the Senate from Nevada, hinted that her opponent Harry Reid should be killed.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/16/sharron-angle-floated-2nd_n_614003.html

Americans are ignorant of many things, but people do understand that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, for private citizens to own weapons. So the people will understand the implication in the above statements by former Senatorial candidate Angle that Senator Harry Reid should be shot.

In the Giffords shooting, we have a much more direct attack.

The above illustration, comes from a Sarah Palin website. It lists Congresswoman Giffords as a target. It has since been removed. But any American can understand the meaning. It shows Democratic members of the Congress who voted for health care.

The symbol used is a gunsight. Any American would understand this. You would not look at someone through a gunsight unless you intended to kill them.

In fact, Sarah Palin has called for violence against other people. She has called President Obama a terrorist. She has asked why Mr. Assange of Wikileaks is not being pursued like Al Qaeda.

http://www.juancole.com/2011/01/sarah-never-does-anything-wrong.html

The following tweet by Sarah Palin is a particualry violent expression:

Quote:

引用:

Don't retreat, Instead - RELOAD!"

http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/03/palin-uses-crosshairs-to-identify-dems-who-voted-for-health-care-reform.php
In America, most people regard a terrorist as somebody who should be just killed. No trial, the government should just kill them. Actually, for many years the US government has been killing people it regards as terrorists. So it is no joke when a major media or political figure calls someone a terrorist. They are actually saying that that person should be killed.

Sarah Palin has made gun culture a major part of her appeal.

And remember, Sarah Palin is a true Christian Fundamentalist, she believes that present American society should be destroyed and recreated according to what Christian Fundamentalists believe.

Of course in America, we have commentators on the Left. Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow come to mind. However, I cannot think of any time where they threatened to kill or harm anyone, unlike commentators from the Right.

http://bestoftheblogs.com/Home/36095

It is one of the bad character traits of Americans to blame some other person for problems. Rush Limbaugh is already saying that the shooting is the fault of Democrats, the American left.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/10/rush-bails-water-arizona_n_806912.html

In fact, Mr. Limbaugh is saying that Democrats will try to protect the shooter, that is why he smiling when he was arrested.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/11/rush-limbaugh-jared-loughner-full-support-democrat_n_807543.html

Americans are an active people. They are not very good at being patient. They feel that they must take action. In the case of the shooting of Congresswoman Giffords, the person who shot her is mentally unstable. But because of violent talk in American society, he felt that Congresswoman Giffords voting for health care was a danger. He felt he had to stop her. So he took violent action.

The violent tone of political rhetoric in the US certainly played a significant part in motivating him to shoot all those people.

Until now, we can say that the differences in American society have been argued verbally. I think that this verbal argument has become so intense, it is like a War. Which is why I have been predicting Civil War in America.

Now, we have crossed a serious line. We have a violent attack by gun for political reasons. The American Right refuses to show remorse. We are getting excuses and major Right wing media figures blaming the Left.

And the Right wing is just as scared of the Left as the Left is of the Right.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/10/glenn-beck-emails-sarah-p_n_806802.html

The American political Right and Left have passed beyond communication. There will be more violence.

All right, my prediction. There is going to be another prominent killing somewhere, of a famous person of the Left being attacked. Then someone from the Left will attack someone on the Right.

After that, in America, all hell will break loose. So for the shape of the American Civil War, let me call it a guerrilla war. I think that for the next year, we will see America descend into guerrilla war between the political Right and Left.

Perhaps in a year or so, who knows? Perhaps the breakup of America into several regional nations, perhaps a military government to restore order? Whatever happens, it won't be good.

And what is happening in Arizona, where the shooting happened? Sales of Glock pistols, the weapon used in the shooting, have doubled.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/11/arizonans-flock-up-the-bl_n_807517.html
Americans are angry, frightened of the future, and the US economy is only getting worse. And they all have guns. The American future is dark and bleak.

Have a Happy New Year!

Recently, I have seen in the media that many Japanese people seem to very worried about the future of Japan.

On my blog, I have written much about the problems facing America. But if I were to compare, America, the country of my birth, and Japan, the country of my present and future, Japan is in a much better state.

Japan has a nationwide system of electric trains. This means, as oil becomes more difficult to find, people and goods shall still travel everywhere inside Japan.

This is not true for America. America's transport system is completely dependent on oil. And usable oil is quickly disappearing. American transport will become impossible in a few years, certainly less than ten years from now.

http://www.minyanville.com/businessmarkets/articles/oil-price-peak-oil-peak-oil/11/19/2010/id/31249

Japan has a well maintained infrastructure. In this country, things work.

In America, infrastructure is beginning to collapse across the nation.

I just saw this in the news. People were stuck in an international flight that had just landed at JFK airport. They sat on the tarmac for 11 hours.

http://157.166.255.31/2010/TRAVEL/12/28/jfk.stuck.tarmac/index.html

Nobody could unload the passengers into a waiting area, nobody could bring them food or water. This is in New York City? I am FROM New York City, massive snow storms are common, they happen every year.

To me, this sounds like a lack of organization, and a lack of a desire to work. In an emergency, why can't customs officers work overtime? Why can't local authorities adjust to the situation? In Japan, local authorities cope with the problem.

Japan has a declining population. This is good. Global Warming means that we are going to have to adapt with new kinds of crops in a changing climate. Japan will in my opinion be able to do this.

America has a growing population, and American agriculture is based on monoculture, the most profitable type of crop or farm animal. Global Warming will tend to push such crops or animals to extinction, and agriculture will not adjust. Without food for it's people, America will not be able to maintain a unified society or nation wide government.

Japan, on the other hand will maintain society and government. I think in the next 20 or 30 years, many foreigners will want to move to Japan. Unfortunately for these future foreigners, we can only take in a few.

And finally, Japan has a hardworking and educated population. Compared to Japan, Americans have never been a hardworking people. But now education in America has been destroyed by Americans, and ignorance and stupidity are appalling.

Not so for Japan. Looking at Japanese young people, I can see an increasing pride in being Japanese. One aspect of this is the increasing number of young couples I see on a date in say, Shinjuku. It is the young man who is wearing a Japanese kimono.

So I don't really worry so much about the future of Japan. We shall survive and prosper. I am very glad that I could live here.

Everybody have a Happy New Year!

Haunted farms in America

Everybody knows that the world in general is in the middle of an economic downturn. And American farms are also suffering. Only 45% of American farms are operating at a profit.

However, some American farmers have a novel solution to their economic problems. They have created "Haunted farms"

There are an estimated 500 "Haunted Farms" in America.

The Bates Motel, located west of Philadelphia Pennsylvania, makes over one million dollars in a year.

http://www.thebatesmotel.com/

Can this work in Japan? I don't see why not. Japan has a rich tradition of ghosts, and there are many legends of haunted battlefields and tragic love affairs from ancient times. For example, Kamakura is full of ghost legends.

An interesting idea. But please don't upset the "real" ghosts!
